1987 Mercede-Benz 420SEL

Post by vervepipes on March 17th 2012, 7:36 pm

This is me second project. Once my truck is painted I'll move onto this. Picked this one up for free. I havent decided if I want to keep it blue or paint it white, I change my mind twice a day.

what a country we live in where people get free Mercedes! Seriously unless that thing looks way worse in person, I'd get a preval touch up sprayer and spot repair that rear quarter lip, then get a Meguiars complete kit and a buffer and save the paint that's on there

it's been repainted completely once, clear coat is peeling and has bondo that it cracking in a few spots. The car does look better in the pictures, although it looks decent from 20 feet.

Black with max tint on the windows? Twisted Evil

Is it a straight six, or small V8? It looks to be at least near top-of-the-line. I guess there were 500 series back then...
The price is right, but she looks like she could use some all-around TLC...

The 420SEL is a 4.2LV8, there were also a number of other engines available in this class, like the 5L and 5.6L(500 and 560). Overall it's in decent shape, the rust on the rear fender is directly related to the rust under the window, and also has led to a hole in the truck. The rest body wise is fairly solid, I have time and a welder so I'm going to do this right, not a bondo job like the last guy did on this poor car.

Fixed an electrical short causing the battery to drain, and repaired the starter 12V+ cable. Mechanically I just need to re-seal the tranny before I can drive it. Starts easily and runs very quietly and smoothly, my '11 Grand Caravan makes more noise idling. I can't wait to get this luxury cruiser on the road!

Water mixing with tranny fluid, my rad has an internal leak so it has strawberry milkshake in the tranny. I'm not going further with this car, gonna scrap it.

That's a shame, the car has (had) a lot of potential. I don't blame you, though. Once water gets inside an auto trans, it's only a matter of time before the clutches barf friction material all over creation.

Thats ok though, because it's left my driveway open for my new project, a car so rare for sale around here that I could not let it go... '76 Toyota Celica GT. The benz will likely live on as somebody's new made in china tools.
