1992 Subaru Legacy

Post by SubieTrav on March 29th 2012, 9:30 pm

I started on my Subaru earlier this week. I had bought Krylon burgundy rattlecans and got one side done, but the color was definitely not coming out the color burgundy I was looking for. So today I stopped at Home Depot and bought a can of Rustolium burgundy and painted the tailgate. This is the color of burgundy I was looking for. When I repaint the side of the car that i already painted in the wrong shade, will that affect the outcome of the real color. I'll post pics a soon as I can figure out how.

To be on the safe side remove the Krylon even if it doesn't change the shade it may not stick. It would be a shame if 4 months down the road it starts to peel off.

To post pictures you need a photobucket account or other picture hosting site. You take a link to the picture you want to post like this for example http://illiweb.com/fa/pbucket.gif

Now when you click on the picture icon you get 1 of these [ img ]and one of these [ /img ] back to back when you copy your link between them like this the picture shows that should get you started .

This is the color Krylon called burgundy, in real life it looks more bubble gum pink.

This is Rustolium burgundy I'm going with this color.

The tailgate color is the solid choice the Krylon looks almost faded compared to the Rustoleum.

Last fall I sanded the hood, removing the peeling c c and scuffed over the remaining cc that I thought was in tact. Since then more cc has peeled. Now I need to continue to sand the remaining cc.

I got the second coat on and then I discovered this.
It is on the tailgate and hood. What did I do wrong. I wiped the surface with PPG wax and grease remover just before painting. Some of the wrinkles are sanding down ok and some spots the paint is coming off down to the primer.

That's cause of the krylon under the paint or you did not allow enough time to dry between coats.

The best thing to do would be to buy some 400 grit sand paper and sand all the paint off.

I actually use alcohol to wipe the surface right before I paint other than the tach cloth.

The first layer of paint was done the day before, I guess since it was cool overnight that slowed down the drying and the paint was still not dry enough. None of the wrinkle happened on areas where Krylon was previously used. I guess I'll allow a full day after painting before adding another coat.

I was sanding down the wrinkles with 220 grit and it was working well to remove them.

Speaking of tack cloth, I've been using the blue shop paper towels. Are they ok to use in place of tack cloth.
