My Test Mule 87 S10

Post by 85S10project on January 4th 2008, 2:58 am

Since I am not going to be painting my 85 right away I decided to play with my 87 since It will be used for 4 wheeling and yard runner. I am not gonna fix the rust like I should instead I am going to use spray foam in the cab corners and the box is gonna be swapped. This will get banged up and dings and scratchs so i just want something cheap to paint it with. I would do spray primer but when i did that to my old ranger it was far from smooth and I didnt like it. This will be painted smoked gray. I have a set of 32s on it right now with no lift but I have a body lift that will be going on it soon.

Well I laid my first coat on today its just the drivers fender and hood but I wanted to see how everything went before doing the whole truck.

You can really see the self leveling of the paint.

It's coming along thumbs up Only thing I would suggest if you don't want those streaks is to go back over and "dry roll" it. Don't add any more paint to the roller just gently roll back over the area until the streaks are gone. The mixture might be a little thin for that cold weather, what ratio are you using?

Yea the mixture was a little too thin plus the truck sits up higher in the rear from the barn. I didnt really care b/c there are a few spots that I didnt get all the greese cleaned off and the paint didnt want to stick so I have to re do a couples spots.

Well it warmed up to the 40s- 50s the past 2 days so I ended up wet sanding the truck down and doing a lil more prep. Tomorrow is suppose to be real nice so I am hoping I can lay some bondo on a few spots to clean it up better.

Here is my latest progress.

As you can tell the 1-1 ratio was a lil thick for the weather outside so today I used a 1.5-1 to thin it out more.

Heres today progress with the paint thinned out more.

Today I got almost the whole truck wet sanded. I smoothed the hood down but I still have a few spots that need a lil more but my water started getting dirty and I was loosing light.

How do you figure its too thin? The only time it was too thin is my first coat otherwise my second coat on the hood was too THICK and the bubbles didnt pop. My 3rd coat is perfect for the weather here.

When doing this paint procedure the first few coats are always going to look "too thin" It's just the nature of the transparency of the paint mixed with the mineral spirits. If you found a nice formula to use for your project keep rolling and let us know how it turns out.

Yeah i thinkin its going to be a 2 tone with the gray on the bottom and black on top.

So far I have the front clip off and most of the interior out. in the spring I will swap the motors to the blazer and then paint and body lift etc. etc.
