Rustoluem black? true black?

Post by mick on April 20th 2012, 2:28 am

Is rustoluem black a true black?
So I have been doing a few parts on my car with the regular (white can) rustoluem black which have been coming out very nice, but the black is more of a very dark gray (once it dried and hardens) than a deep black. Just looking on the shelf at the local home depot there are about three different types of products rustoluem carries in black.
regular rustoluem (white can)
Professional rustoluem (gray can)
topside rustoluem (picture of speed boat on the can)
Is there a difference in the black between the three products, is the regular rustoluem just a cheap poor mans black.
I am happy with the regular rustoluem but if the pro rustoluem is a deeper black I will probably switch before I get too deep into the project.

Super late reply but I'm a big black paint fan and I wanted to put a comment on this. I've only used black Tremclad paint so far the I've read that they are very similar and are more or less Canada's version of rustoleum. The Tremclad black is a very deep black that buffs to a super high gloss with an amazing reflection. I'll post a few pictures below that show off the paint a bit. I'd expect similar, maybe better results from rustoleum.

One of the last few coats of black on my trunk lid.

Another look at the black reflection with some buffing.

A good shot of the DA and compound and black reflection.

I know what you're saying about the pictures, even my best ones don't show a perfectly done black car, in the sun, with a high resolution camera. You'll have to take my word in that it's as black as the night in person.

I like it a lot. I started using it to polish some friends and family's vehicles. It let's me make a few extra bucks and hone my skills. After doing about 20 vehicles now I can say the polisher was worth every penny and then some. Would be nice to have a wool pad and rotary polisher but this works great on our rustoleum jobs and factory restoration.
