Semi-Gloss Rust-Oleum 91 FSJ Grand Wagoneer Sprayed.

Post by HD_Jeep on June 3rd 2012, 12:50 am

Its time I jump into the mix with my 91 FSJ Grand Wagoneer...

This was about two years before I bought her.

She wasn't this nice when I got her home clear coat was shot and rust was under the wood vinyl in some areas.

Being a family man funds are rare. So I knew it was up to me to bring her back from the dead. It was a LONG process due to my family duties and no Shop.

I found this website which was a blessing. Here are some pics of getting her right and making her mine enjoy.

I stripped the wood Vinyl off... Not Easy...

Sanded and primed her removed the few small dents and replaced passenger front fender.

I gave her a facelift with a Rhino grill.

then a 6 inch lift.

Lots of sanding and priming. Shes a big canvas to work on...

I used cheap set up for spraying all from Harbor Freight.

I sanded all the tired paint off. Primed her with self etching Rust-Oleum rattle bombs then sprayed it 4 to 5 coats in 95 degree weather over the holiday weekend outside.

My mixture was 1/4 Mineral Spirits to 3/4 Rust-Oleum. I was amazed on how it turned out so has everyone else who has seen it.

Her she is...

Hood up close.

She has a Black Satin or Denim look to her now. I am very glad I able to do all of this on my own for so cheap. I wore a very high end 3M breather which was the most expensive item I used in this project.

This was my first time to spray paint a vehicle would I do this again In a Heart beat. cheers

Feel free to ask any questions. Very Happy

I like the old school grill. The whole thing looks cool in the flat black.

That looks really good. Is that an 8 gal compressor? Did you have to let the air build back up alot? The reason I'm asking is because I have a H.F 21 gal (older red one) and I didn't think it would be able to keep up. Really nice. Got me ready to go out and get a paint gun. Very Happy

How many coats did you use? did you let it tack up and then re-coat or completely dry between coats? Sorry for all the questions. Thats the look I want for my square body C10. Want to make sure all goes well.

No. Using a HVLP spray gun the compressor keep up just fine I just took my time.

The reason I'm asking is because I have a H.F 21 gal (older red one) and I didn't think it would be able to keep up. Really nice. Got me ready to go out and get a paint gun.
The spray guns I used were super cheap.. 33 oz. Household Low Volume, Low Pressure Spray Gun
16.99..

Very Happy

2 Horsepower, 8 Gallon, 125 PSI Portable Air Compressor. (This is the one I used.) At about 60lbs dialed in presure. The compressor keep up just fine.

How many coats did you use?
(6 coats in total.) I still want the add a couple more to the hood and top. But that can wait.

Did you let it tack up and then re-coat or completely dry between coats?
It was so hot I just let it tack up for about 20 minutes and continued spraying.
Sorry for all the questions.
Hey no problem glad to help if I can.

That's the look I want for my square body C10. Want to make sure all goes well.

Good luck please keep me posted...
