68 Pontiac Lemans TOPSIDE BLACK

Post by inda_bebe on June 25th 2012, 3:06 pm

this was a car i did in my garage thru a HVLP harbor freight sprayer. only wetsanding after the 4th and final coat no wetsanding inbetween coats. Paint flattened and layed out nicely. BUT, this method had a **** load of red and pink overspray. So now im gonna try and do this again, but cleaner this time. im gonna do a mix of both SPRAY AND ROLL.

Im gonna roll on the paint to the body and spray the door jambs, trunk, hood, fenders, hood & bumpers. and then spray on a final coat on everything attached. being extra careful and not rush anything this time.

The day i bought it, from this man. (this is not me)

Some tweeker painted my car w/ shitty results. i asked for a Gunmetal Metallic and this is what i got. came out looking like he sprayed on grey rustoleum. So figured id do this myself.

Heres my plan and paint formula, if anyone sees anything that i can change up please let me know what i can do to improve steps and mixes. Oh, and ill be using a DA sander to wetsand everthing, but if it starts to kill and burn through the paint, ill sand by hand.

Rolling (body)
Topside paint 50%
Mineral Spirits 40%
Penetrol 10%

[ ] 2 coats @ 12 hours of flash time

[ ] wetsand @ 400 grit

[ ] 2 coats @ 12 hours of flash time

[ ] wetsand @ 600 grit

[ ] 2 coats @ 12 hours of flash time

[ ] wetsand @ 800 grit

Spraying (door jambs, trunk, hood, fenders, hood & bumpers)
Topside paint 50%
Indust. Main. Coat Thinner 50%

[ ] 2 coats @ 3-4 hours of flash time

[ ] wetsand @ 800 grit

[ ] 2 coats @ 3-4 hours of flash time

Final Coats (Sprayed)
Topside paint 50%
Indust. Main. Coat Thinner 50%

[ ] 2 coats @ 3-4 hours of flash time

[ ] dry for 2 weeks

[ ] wetsand @ 1000 grit / 1500 grit / 2000 grit

Cut & Buff
[ ] Cut w/ Wool Pad & Ultimate Compoud

[ ] Polish w/ Foam Pad & Wax (not sure what kind works best)

AS I UPDATE THIS PROJECT, ILL BE TAKING HIGH RESOLUTION PHOTOS CAUSE I THINK THERE ARENT THAT MANY WITH RESULTS.

as of today, body work is almost done: 9/7/12

9/23/2012 Results from the first coat. 4:1:1 paint/ms/hardener.

this was from glaze and i primered about 3 coats of filler primer before i wet sanded this thing. how can i fix this?

i thought i got rid of all 180 grit and 320 grit scratches w/ 600 grit, now i can tell that i missed a few.

tons of orange peel, worse than the fender i did on a test run. what can i do to fix this?

Sounds like a good plan. I'd wetsand by hand, but that's me. I'll following this thread...keep the pics coming.

Meguire's ultimate compound, polish or 205 and 105 ,all are meguire's product's, the ultimate product's are more user friendly. the 205 and 105 are from the mirror glaze proffesional line. I may be a little biased on this because I have used these produt's since I started driving!!!!

ive been thinking about the idea of putting some SUMMIT BRAND acrlyic urethane clear LOW VOC 2.1

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-SWSC620G/

over the TOPSIDE GLOSS BLACK, but i want to do 2 midcoats of pearl.

i dont want to do the whole 2 stage paint, because i live in California painting my car in a garage and dont want the smell to bother the neighboors. so, ill be spraying the TOPSIDE on any removable panels outside and rolling the TOPSIDE on the body in the garage, i may even spray it depending on smell and overspray.

after a couple of weeks, ill be spraying the pearl midcoat from the summit clear, then 3 coats of just clear.

how bad is the smell of LOW VOC 2.1?

and anyone think this is a bad idea? i just sprayed a coat of regal red on a fender using 1:1 paint and acetone. there was fisheye but i dont give a ****. this was just a test panel. later today ill sand it to 800 grit and the spray a light coat of pearl withe some leftover duplicolor paintshop clear. JUST TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS. ill be posting some pictures soon later on today.

The smell is still kinda bad imho, even though it is low voc, it just does not have as many volatile chemical's in the mix.

i did a test panel on a fender w/ some left over rustoleum regal red. i sprayed on 2 coats using a HF HVLP purple gun. the ratio i used was 1:1 paint and acetone. way off of what i was gonna use, lol. i wanted to get an idea of how easy it would be to spray.

i know there was tons of fish eye cause i didnt clean it like i would if i were gonna do it for real. but i just sanded the whole panel down w/ 180 grit.

i think it sprayed on **** good w/out any wetsand between coats. im gonna spray on 3 coats and wetsand w/ a 1000 grit and 2 coats of clear pearl midcoat then 3 coats of clear. then finally wetsand w/ 1000g-1500g-2000g.

buff the **** out of it.

any suggestions?

the done w/ majority of the body work. i just have to block sand the roof and hood. just picked up a inline air sander and that stuff is amazing. saved time like crazy. i know this is taking a while but i only have and hour a day to work on the thing.

the car was painted a shitty grey by some tweaker. i would sand the gloss off then spray primer then block sand the thing and then fill it. now all i do is spray guide coat over the grey and block sand w/ 80g. then add putty and sand again.

i can say that ill be ready to paint sometime at the end of this month.

im gonna be changing the paint from TOPSIDE to PROFESSIONAL (grey can) rustoleum. could i still use Indust. Main. Coat Thinner or should i just use acetone or paint thinner? im still searching for a good ratio, mix or formula on thinning it.

If I were going to spray it I would use a acrylic enamel automotive automotive thinner, mid temp preferably, acetone would dry to fast, the enamel thinner would give you better flow out on the paint, as far as a mix I use a 4:1 mix, 4 part's paint ,1 part thinner, this is a standard ratio for most acrylic enamel auto paint's,have used this mix and ratio with alkyd enamel paint's and it work's well. thumbs up

Nice, so simple. I'm assuming I can use car enamel thinner with no problems, right?

I just did the first coat after wetsanding with 600 grit. I ended up with tons of fisheye like my test fender on the previous pictures, also I noticed some areas of deep scratches from 180 grit that I missed.

What should I do to correct this? The formula I used were 4:1:1 paint:ms:hardener thru a hvlp gun.

Wipe it down before and after you sand.

Re: 68 Pontiac Lemans TOPSIDE BLACK

i did sand it down a couple days after i let it dry. then i did a light coat of primer and resprayed again and it came out w/out fisheye.

i wet sanded the car w/ 800 to get some of the dust that laid on the paint and i misted a coat of the duplicolor paint shop clear that i had laying around and added pearl and left over gloss black. now the car has a dark gun metal color that i was originally going for. im pretty happy w/ the color. i knew that the rustoleum gloss black wasnt going to be REALLY black, so i thought i would give this a try and it looks impressive.

my only concern is that there were some sanding marks from the 800grit before i misted the pearl coat. now that its dry you can still see 800 scratches. but, when i clean it up and wipe it down w/ mineral spirits you cant see the wetsand scratches. would a few coats of clear hide it?

i plan on spraying the car w/ clear this weekend. the 1st coat w/ just a touch of pearl then im gonna do another 2 or 3 coats of just clear.

My 2 cents =

if you are going to spray ---

1.spray rustoleum the way rustoelum recommends with acetone

2.I prefer any cheapie enamel online total kit including paint = $79 bucks
http://www.amazon.com/Auto-Paint-Single-Stage-Enamel/dp/B000COHAX4

there is even cheaper paint out there $30/gallon acrylic enamel if you must

good luck
