1970 VW bus---'Whomping Willow'

Post by chopperchuck on July 22nd 2012, 9:42 pm

Well i finally got close enough to throw some paint on her today cheers after sanding every bloody day on the week ends ahhh it seemed like i would never get done sanding! ( still have do the easy side!)so far about 45-70hrs of sanding & beating the dents & bondo out of her! the P/owner just filled the dents full of bondo & called it a day! some of the dents were 3/8 of an inch deep! i don't wanna post 125+ pictures so here's a link o my photobucket album grin
http://photobucket.com/VWbus4DJ

I really thought i screwed up during the first coat & it orange peeled BIG time wow (wrong mix!)to thick,I'll have to wet sand the day lights out of the door, but the rest of the right side settled pretty good-i think....
here's what i did today::::

My son grabbed the wrong White paint (Latex) & can't seem to find the receipt! ahhh take a look at the album & look to see how it's coming! enjoy give me any feedback--i'm up to it!

I meant 2 inch diameter, i tried to use some crappy 2 inch long foam rollers & they fell apart, the ones you're talking about are the smaller ones (maybe 1'or 1 1/2' diameter} ---chuck

Penetrol is an oil based additive for paint. It will make paint flow. I don't know if you can get it in the USA. floodaustralia.net/products/paint_additives/penetrol.php

Yeah you sick boy hahaha.
What paint do you use?
I use Toplac and I'm still looking for the perfect mix.
I think paint-penetrol-turps : 50-27-13 is pretty good for toplac in colder conditions. Still high gloss and little or no orange peel. I paint after work/dark in the shed and it's around 12-14 C at that time. eye turn

I'm using Rust-Oleum safety red mixed with mineral spirits,i started out at 50/50 mix & thats where i got the heavy orange peel, i think i ended up with something like 70/30 MS to paint mix,i'll have to check when i get home,
here's the paint i'm using,

WOW usually 50/50 is really thin. What is your humidity at? Any over 60% humidity and the paint sets up to fast. Also try Penetrol in your mix to get it to flow better.
That safety red is an awesome color. I spray canned all my trim in safety red.
