Fisheye? Big time!

Post by slogfilet on July 30th 2012, 1:36 am

I have a spare hood for my Civic. It is primered, and I sanded with 180, then puttied, then 320, then wetsanded with 400. I cleaned with mineral spirits and denatured alcohol before rolling my first coat of Topside black. My mix was 2 parts paint, 1 part Penetrol, and one part odorless mineral spirits.

I got a million bubbles at first, which I was able to deal with. The weird part was the hundreds of fisheye spots that appeared... immediately. I was able to roll over them aggressively and they diminished, but there are some left. Does this mean my durface prep was insufficient? Should I sand it off and clean again, or is there another possible cause? It's just like tons of little spots where the paint didn't "take."

Glad I started with a test hood. Very Happy

I'm getting this, I think it's where the bubbles are bursting but the paint is drying too fast. I'm sure they'll flat out!

I've been letting my roller get dry and then rolling the bubbles whilst wet to pop them manually, it's removing 90% of them.
