04 kawasaki ultra

Post by btldigger on January 5th 2008, 9:44 pm

This project started out because of some mods being done to the bottom of the ski. I had used brightside previosly to paint a boat so I was somewhat familiar with its use. I started out to roll the whole thing but after doing the primer with a roller i decided this was something akin to painting door jambs. So I cheated and brought out the hvlp gun. The pics will show why I say this. I have used it both with 313 thinner and 216 that interlux recomends and xylene which is what the 216 thinner is. 216 is the thinner used for spraying it drys faster still self levels well. I started with 2 coats of prekote primer as of today im up to 3 coats of paint and will probably do 3 more. The pics show where it started before being stripped and flipped. When its done the whole thing will be black with some flame work airbrushed on it.

Got a little more done. These pics are 5 coats paint, wetsanded for #6. After this coat I think im done with the bottom just a final wet sand and polish it out. I have been mixing 3 parts paint to 1 part xylene and it is leveling out well, not much peel to sand out. I have been sanding between all coats. Also managed to get all of the bolt on pieces primed and sanded. Those parts will get the first as the bottom gets its last coat.
To tell you guys a little more about the ski, stock it would run 64 mph. Right before I stripped it down it was running a tad over 71 mph after some mods. When it all gets put back together with a modded engine and the hull mods it should run 75 or so on a gps. If you have never done it that is flying on something that is 9' long with some where in the neiborhood of 200 hp. It will go 0-60 in about 3.5 - 4 seconds wow

Here are some pics of tonights work. The bottom side is ready for wet sand and buff. It now has 6 coats on the bottom. The top pieces got coat #1. I got a little happy spraying and got a run or 2 but a dry roller took care of them.

Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question but I know nothing about jet skis. Are you going to be riding this in salt or fresh water or both? Just curious how the paint will hold up to salt water.

It will be fresh water only. It should hold up fine, it has done well on my boat . The bottom does take a beating so I have chosen to just buff out the bottom. That way should any touchup need to be done its easy to do. The top side will be clear coated after the airbrush work. I got the wet sanding done today and the second coat on the top pieces. I think im going to let the bottom set a few days to cure more before I start buffing on it.

Re: 04 kawasaki ultra

Started out trying to use my little 6in orbital buffer.....it sucks for buffing out. Went to harbor freight today and they had the varible speed 7in buffer on sale. Picked up that and a couple of twisted wool pads. These things work great, buffing this out was a breeze. I used all maguires products. Started out with #1 med cut, #2 fine cut, #9 swirl remover, #3 machine glaze then finished it off with #26 yellow wax. So what do you guys think?

Thanks guys. Its not quite a $100 paint job but stiil way cheaper than a body shop. I dont think I would have gotten this good a job in a paint shop without spending several thousand dolloars. I am hoping the top will be even better. Im thinking of doing 5 - 6 coats of clear on it.

I wish I had the patience and skill to buff out paint like that. That is one nice looking detail job. Keep up the good work. I can't wait to see the top side when it's finished.

That looks really good man. What kind of flame work do you have planned to airbrush on the top? True fire would be sick. rock

Here are the bolt on pieces with coat #7. They are ready for a final wetsand. They will get cleared with the rest of the topside. Now if i can just not sand through an edge.

Ran across these pics. They are my first paint project . The stripe is painted also. After I painted the boat the trailer looked like a@$, so it got it too. I learned how to paint and do fiberglass. This boat looked so bad I got it for $500 and it ran. I wish I could find the before pics. It was burgundy and gray Wit a white bottom.

Well your obviously a natural. Are you going to try to tackle the real flames yourself? I've been wanting to try it out on a test panel just to see how difficult it is. I have and artistic background so I may be able to grasp something like that quickly.
