84 Chevrolet Truck C10 5.3 Swap'd - Metal Flaked ? Dark Blue

Post by AGearHead4Life on November 21st 2012, 12:11 pm

Alright guys, Imma start a thread here for my current project. I plan to start painting it this weekend. I've been mixing the paint and researching.

I'm mixing Rustoleum Royal Blue with Black to get a dark blue. I also added Aluminum which gave it a metal flake look.

I plan to at the least paint my hood this weekend.

I'll post up more pics when I get home tonight.

In case you're lazy like me and dont feel like reading all the posts of this thread, the link below has the video playlist of my progress. Wink

Sounds cool. What transmission are you running?

That is a nice little short-bed! I never realized that they changed the fenders on those trucks. I never noticed the vertically mounted parking lights/turn signal. I always figured that they kept the old fenders with the horizontally mounted lights, all the way through the model run, from '73 to '87, or whenever.

If that were my truck, I'd be tempted to go with a pair of the older style fenders, and the '73-style grill.

I pulled this truck from a junk yard about a year and a half ago. About a year later I had the 5.3 in and driving it. I'm building it on a very low budget. Engine was $400 complete. Truck was free. Traded a pressure washer somebody gave me for it.

The plan for this truck is what I call my "Street Work Truck" since its lowered. I plan to use it to tow my 92 Camaro when needed and to haul what ever may be needed.

Waiting for first coat to dry on hood now...

I need to quit rushing things. I already see fish eye everywhere. I think i didnt let the hood dry enough after washing and wiping down with mineral oil.

Trying to get the right color I have mixed way too much paint. Well at least I'll have plenty for another car or touch ups!

Being half color blind doesnt help either.

Two coats have been slapped on and its left alone to dry. Tomorrow morning I plan to wet sand and apply two more coats. Hopefully I'll slow down and see less imperfections tomorrow.

Let's see some progress pics. I wonder what that aluminum in the mix is going to do for your ability to cut and buff it.

I'm Uploading a video now and will post the link once it is done.

I did the two coats last night rushing it. This morning I sanded it with 400 grit (was all I had and everybody is closed for Thanksgiving). I then coated it again (Third coat). that one seemed to lay a litte weird, but I noticed it seem to look better when dry if I layed it on thicker. So I waited 20 mins and put the fourth coat on thick. Actually I poured the paint onto the hood and spread it around with the roller.

Pics coming now.

After this hood experience I believe I will bust out my $10 Harbor Freight FV LP paint gun for the rest of the truck. I expect a lost less sanding with the spray.

Anybody experience the difference between the two techniques?

I agree, spraying will be much better , it will even out the mettallic. gonna be a nice truck when your done, and another thing look into using acrylic enamel hardner in your paint when you spray it, it will give the paint better durability, and gloss in the end product, add about 4 ounces per quart of paint.

Thanks! She's been fun so far.

I cant wait to spray it. I'm just not having fun trying to figure out how to get the body work ready. I found three dents in the hood that I would not have seen before painting. So How the heck was I supposed to fill it if I couldnt see it. They only idea I have so far is to just skim a coat of Bondo over the whole truck.

Thanks for the tip on the hardener. A buddy of mine had suggested the same, so I guess it must work out pretty well.

What do ya'll think? I probably should have block sanded it some more, shouldnt I? I was just wet sanding until it felt smooth. I couldnt see that It wasnt completely level until it was dry and I was prepping to paint.

This is the sanding with 600 grit after the fourth coat. I have since added the 5 + 6 coat. We'll see tomorrow how it came out. Its really too cold out here right now to be doing this.
