Mercedes Rolling in progress

Post by Littlehandegan on January 27th 2013, 3:59 pm

Here she is. Sanded the car with 320 and applied a light coat. Little less than 50:50 with a little Penetrol.

First coat-

Second coat-

Any tips or comments?

Should I do another coat and then wetsand, or do so now?

I haven't started my first project yet but when it gets warm I got a Ranger to paint. A lot projects I have read about usually roll 2 coats of paint then wet sand. I think it is all based on how flat your paint looks. If your not really seeing orange peel you could probably do another coat. I think most people start with 400 grit before the first coat. Maybe do a 3rd coat and then sand with 400 grit and see how it looks. Someone with some experience will comment and give you some good advice shortly I'm sure. Keep us posted and good luck.

Yes, 2nd coat then a sand. You want to be able to get anough paint on there but what you don't want to do is build up big thick layers of orange peel, so it is a balance. Ultimately you'll do

2 coats then sand, 2 more coats, sand, then 2 final coats and sand buff

say 400 wet/dry for the first one, then 600 grit for the second and 800 for the third sandings. now comes the fun part with 1000 grit wet/dry and depends how far you want to go maybe 1200 then get out the polisher.

I didn't get full coverage until the 8th coat. Don't worry, you're doing it right. Thin coats equals very flat, shiny paint at the end.

That's starting to look good. More coverage equals more gloss.

4 coats

This is after a quick wetsanding with 800. You can see some spots where I wasnt getting good coverage and caused "lines".

Another 2 coats going on then wetsand with 1000.

And another 2.
