1994 Mitsubishi Delica

Post by VanVonVan on August 27th 2013, 6:58 pm

Hello All,

Here is my 1994 Mitsubishi Delica. It is a RHD imported from Japan. We here up north can import these fabulous vans after 15 years where as down south you need to wait 25 years. It is a full 4x4, 4 cylinder turbo diesel. Its chassis is based on the mitsu montero which is all over the states.

Now I have never done any body work before and would love some tips on how I should do it. As far as I understand any visible rust is sanded down then if there is any dips maybe a skim of bondo, then primer then paint. But some ideas for my rear bumper would be awesome.

And my rear hatch I am guessing I hammer and dolly then bondo then prime and paint.

Here is some other rust I have to fix:

I am choosing this method to paint my van for a few reasons, I want to stop the rust, get a new color and if I scratch the paint its a simpleish fix. oh and I am cheap and after reading this forum its seems like I should be able to achieve a pretty good 10 fter.

Thanks

popcornOh man, that thing reminds me of the Subaru van I almost bought when I was stationed in Germany in the 80s! Top speed in that thing was only 60 mph but it got great mileage. I turned it down because I couldn't bring it back home. I'm watching this one.

Well I took a leap this weekend and rolled my hood to see how it would look. It turned out pretty decent, I got 5 coats on ( I think I need to do a few more as it is thin in a few areas) but I had to get it back together to go to work this morning. I am gonna upload a bunch of pics later this afternoon andf was wondering how do I get the picture in my post and not the link? Do I just have to resize?

Thanks,

I tried my hand at body work and rolled on 5 coats on my hood. I mixed 1 can of gloss white rustoleum with 3/4 of a can medium blue. When I was rolling I eyeballed 1 part paint to .5 Penetrol and .5 mineral spirits. It is definitely a 10 fter. I should probably do at least 3 more coats and a some more wet sanding.

Coat 1

Coat 2

Coat 3 after a 600 grit wetsand

Coat 4

Coat 5 After wet sanded at 1000 grit

Back on my van with the hood scoop rattle canned gloss black:

That hood is looking good. Some serious shine there.
