2nd Gen Escort (1992), dark smoked gray with Aluminum

Post by Tammus DeLupa on September 11th 2013, 5:30 pm

Before

After the deer and the reason I am here!

I primed the white body parts and the Bondo fill places, from dents that were worked out.

After three coats

Another two coats and cleaned up, ready to drive to work for the next five days

After sanding a bunch of orange peal and fish eyes, because I was mixing the paint to thick (1 Aluminum : 2 Gloss Black : 2 Smoky Gray : 1.6 Mineral Spirits or 3 paint to 1+ Mineral Spirits) and the temperature being to high (90's). I mixed another batch (1 Aluminum : 2 Gloss Black : 2 Smoky Gray : 3 Mineral Spirits : 1 Penetrol or 5 paint to 3 Mineral Spirits to 2 Penetrol)
I laid down a layer of paint this one went on much smother and no fish eyes and a small bit of orange peal.

Still have more to come.

That color looks a lot like the elanor cars.

Yes you are right I did not even know about Elanor, except for Mr. Allen  Poe's.

I had decided to become a blasphemer and go BC/CC on my truck because I wanted to keep it gray and all the available grays from rusto seem to look like primer. After seeing your project I'm starting to regret the $250 worth of paint that I have purchased to do it "the right way" because your color was just what i was shooting for. I think the catch will be that since you have "metal flake" you will need to clear coat to keep it from dulling. Do you have plans to do that?

I think I might roll down another two coats, weather permitting, then cut, buff and wax. No plans of clear coat unless the plan fails, then not sure which way I will go. This is the first time to do this, so time will tell.
