Rustoleum Marine Coatings Primer

Post by mike460 on November 14th 2013, 1:42 pm

Has anybody used this stuff? I am planning on rolling my truck in the near future with Rustoleum Topside Gloss White, and would like to prime it after the bodywork. I like the idea of having primer that is the same base color as the color I will be painting. Any thoughts?

I'm not an expert but it looks like it would work fine with the Topside paint. Having a primer color match the paint would certainly have its benefits during application. My only thought is if you ever had damage (door ding or rock chip) and we're to examine the issue, you might have a hard time telling if it was down to the paint or the primer. Since the primer dries flat (not gloss), it 'should' be easy to tell but... You also might not notice a rock chip right away because the primer hides it. If a chip to the primer is left to long, it could start to soak up moisture and cause rust, or bubbling. The more I think about it, I'd be inclined to get a similar shade or color to what you're painting, but not exactly the same. That being said, same color primer sure would speed up the number of coats for full coverage.

Hope I didn't muddy the water too much ;-)
