90 chevy 1500

Post by stang87gt on April 18th 2014, 1:41 pm

well It has been a while and starting another project here is my 1990 chevy 1500 picked it up 2 years ago in alabama for 800 bucks.
I have since moved to Illinois and this winter sucked after living in Ga for the last 7 years.

I did not start taking pictures as soon as i would of liked to, I tore out the raggedy interior and painted everything light grey and upholstered it in charcoal grey.

I believe the truck had a rattle can rusto job on it already the paint was delaminating pretty bad so they just covered with out any prep and so now i am trying to get everything smooth. the pictures in primer is just rattle can filler primer to cover the bare metal areas I am hoping to have it in primer by the end of the weekend as i am fairly far along in first smoothing out phase.

I plan on Spraying Rusto Charcoal Grey below the body line. and am experimenting with Rusto silver wheel paint for the top may just go with the rusto aluminium paint instead.

primer sanded with 400 dry on 6 inch random orbital buffer with a foam backing

had to sand off almost all of the primer on the driver side bed and whole tail gate because my sprayer decided to puke all over

Sprayed

Post by stang87gt on May 12th 2014, 6:37 pm

ok After a failed attempt at rustoleum Metallic from a can sanded it down sprayed primer over it and it cracked everywhere so I left it for about a week of being pissed and then sanded it all of and reprimed and got is sprayed today and holy runs and orange peel mixed it 3:1 should have been 4 so instead of driving 30 min to get another can to thicken it up i back rolled the runs did not turn out as well as i had hoped straight out of the gun the last one i sprayed was white so it was alot more forgiving.

so I am going to let it dry for a few weeks and wet sand the OP out some areas are terrible some areas flowed out the hood looks amazing

wet sanded all the massive OP out burned through a few spots Touch up those spots tomorrow wet sand 2000 grit and polish i cut the tailgate to see how it looked am pretty happy with it has a haze to it which i believe to be ultimate compound that i did not get off fully

Burn through really bad OP in this area

I damp sanded with 400 grit on my random orbital buffer at about 2000 rpm to cut the Op down Quickly

Looks GREAT! All of your prep work/hard work paid off. Plus I think smoke grey is one of the best colors for this process. Would be proud to roll up at a car show, barbeque or boat dock in that.

thanks mike. it is actually charcoal grey and the gloss came out better than expected and it hides pretty well for being a dark color
