1960 Renault Caravelle Narvik Blue

Post by Mercurymarc on March 26th 2017, 8:32 pm

Not sure if this forum is still active...
But I plan to roll my next project soon. My 1st one was 7 years ago- I rolled a 1963 Mercury Comet using white rustoleum bare metal primer then restoleum white thinned with 30% mineral spirits. It turned out pretty well. This time I plan to try Rustoleum Topside paint  using mineral spirits and penetrol, and a little hardener.  Will post more pics soon.

Caravelle Paint Progress

Post by Mercurymarc on July 2nd 2017, 11:32 am

Here is my progress so far...
Primed/rolled with 3 coats of Rustoleum Topside thinned with mineral spirits (about 1/3 mineral spirits to get the consistency of skim milk) then and sanded with 400 grit paper. Then I rolled with Rustoleum Topside Blue + White+ Green to match the Narvik Blue Renault 1960 Color paint diluted 3 parts paint to 2 parts Penetrol. The first coal had incomplete coverage, and even less when wetsanded. Then 2nd coat looks better but still a few incomplete coverage spots. Looks like it will need at least 2 more coats- may do total of 4-6 coats to get complete coverage.
Au revoir~
-Marc

When it arrived...

Bodywork with spray can primer/sealer over the bondo

1st coat of white Rustoleum Topside Primer

2nd coat of white Rustoleum Topside Primer

3rd coat of white Rustoleum Topside Primer

1st coat of Rustelom Topside Primer Blue + White + Green thinned with Penetrol

2ndcoat of Rustelom Topside Primer Blue + White + Green thinned with Penetrol

Lovely job! How much paint have you laid down? And how much have you thinned it?

That sure doesn't look like a convertible when the top is up! I was kind of shocked to scroll down and see the top gone...

I thinned the paint about about 30% with mineral spirits and added about 10% penetrol, and added a little mineral spirits when the paint seemed to thicken up a bit- best when it ran just a little on the vertical surfaces, otherwise too much orange peel. Yes, the top comes off!

Great job Marc -great job. How many coats do you plan total --are you still

2 coats sand 600 grit, 2 coats sand 800 grit, 2 coats sand 1000 grit? just trying to see where the current state of thinking /best practices is.
