Here's a question..

I used marine epoxy to lay up sections of my rusted off roof gutter. Which topside primer do I use since I'm covering a little bare metal but more epoxy? The primer for metal , or the primer for fiberglass and wood?

Thanks

Rustoleum 254863 Filler Primer is designed for metal, wood and fiberglass surfaces.  I'm not sure why the topside primers were specialized for either metal Or,  wood and fiberglass.  Confusing..

So my cart has..

Rust-Oleum 206999 Marine Topside Paint, White, 1-Quart
Rust-Oleum Automotive 254863 Filler Primer Gray 1- Quart
Valspar 4625 Enamel Hardener 8 oz
FLOOD/PPG FLD4-04 Penetrol Additive 1-Quart

Am I missing anything?

Thanks

Hello

fiberglass flexes more so there might be a small amount of flex additive in there. For your purposes probably either one is fine. Think of all the people out there painting a thin hatch cover or something.

Can't wait to see the pix.

That makes sense wantajav thanks.

I used epoxy as a metal filler so it wont be flexing to much.

Can I ask another question?   Iv been shaping my epoxy filler with 80 grit as it doesn't sand as easily as bondo.  What grit to I have to increase to when using rolled/brushed on thinned rustoleum?  Can I leave the epoxy filler and surround paint or bare metal 80 grit before the Filler Primer?  Then after the first coat of primer increase to 400?

And do I thin my primer?

Thanks

use the standard progression of grit
80 to shape
220 to get the 80 scratches out
320 - prior to the paint

69Charger of moparts forum said you can paint over bare metal, bare filler . The filler primer should fill some scratches. Others can provide more detail but I would look at the primer then decide if you need a second coat then hit it with 400.
To thin the primer pour some in a plastic bucket then drip in a little thinner, see if the consistency looks thin enough to roll out but not too runny so you get runs. Trial and error works for this step.
