I'm going to paint the body lines orange, will probably do that tomorrow evening after work, as well as putting a coat of paint on the door jambs and the inner doors as well. Then Saturday morning spend a few hours wet sanding.

Yep, 3 neigbors came up to me.

All really like the color choice; they all think it looks a lot better than the brown, which actually looks better in the pics than it does in person.

All the neighbors could accept that I was using a roller; but they all went "huh" when I told them what the paint I was using is.

Can't wait until its done...

Just completed the 3rd coat, and it looks better and better.

Finished the 5th coat yesterday... decided to make it a little thicker.... bad idea.... it was also quite a bit warmer... so to make a long story short.... orange peel and some runs.....

Be spending some time after work tonight wet sanding and hopefully get three more coats on it by the end of the week/weekend... which I'm hoping will give me full coverage. I have to say though that each coat gives more and more gloss... I hope that after I wetsand and buff out the final coat that I get a gloss thats as good.

Then I'll have to paint my mirros, adjust my sagging drive door and then finally get it on the road. Hopefully a couple of weeks.

already have them... just have to put them in. I think I'm also going to have to adjust the lower hinge position relative to where it is now.

When I'm done with the car it isn't going to be some concours anal restoration (hence the roller painting) but its going to be a nice 24 year old driver that I actually drive, except for the winter last year I drove it to work everyday it already has 160,000 miles on it and runs strong.

Once again, it's looking great bob. I think after seeing your project, I will be rolling down a primer coat next time for a more uniform coverage. Great job!

Re: Finally Started My 84 corvette.

Well, just a quick update.

I'm at 9 coats now and pretty much ready to sand. I find that the sides of the car actually covered much better than the hood ( can't figure out why). As a result I decided to put an thicker coat on the hood to give me some more coverage and a little extra paint to sand smooth.

I'm probably going to give the car few days to harden while I paint the jambs and then start the final wetsanding.

I think I'm going to start with 800 very lightly on the hood and rear of the car (basically the flat areas) Then 1000, 1500,2000, maybe 2500... then use my DA and see what I can get for a shine.

Hopefully it works....

ps. I don't know about everyone else but I found that wetsanding the paint was much more succesful using just the paper and my hand versus a sanding block.

I do, but they really don't look any different than the rest, so I didn't bother.

I painted the jambs tonight. Probably finish those tomorrow, paint the mirrors remove masking tape, and then hopefully on the weekend be finished buffing and all.

I decided that 9 coats was enough, if I find that I still have thin areas I'll spot paint the car at that point.

Sanded half the hood.

Post by bob84 on February 28th 2008, 1:56 am

Well, I couldn't wait I had to see what the polished and buffed paint looks like. Instead of painting my door jambs I sanded , buffed and polished half of my hood.

Looks pretty good, about a 4 footer. I have some sanding scratches and residual orange peel but otherwise looks good. I would definetly do this again, although next time I would make my paint coats thicker and sand out the extra orange peel. I have a few areas on the hood that are a bit thin, but I can live with it. I may actually paint the hood again in a few weeks, I want to get the car on the road, and at this point the paint looks quite good, like I said earlier a 4 footer. I could probably spend days and days to make the paint perfect but then I would cry the first time someone scratched it.

After wetsanding, with 1000,1500,2000 and hitting the paint with my DA and megiaurs fine cut.. I must say I was a little dissapointed.. The paint was glossy from an angle but was dead from straight on. No worries though meguiars swirl remover took care of that problem. Now the only problem is the thin areas, some orangepeel that is more visible than tactile (didn't sand well enough between coats I guess) and some scratches that I put in the paint, I guess when wetsanding..

Here are some pics. One pic was taken with flash one without, hence the difference in color. The first pic illustrates an unsanded section of hood on the left, buffed and polished in the middle and buffed on the right ( although this doesn't look all that much different from the buffed and sanded in the photo) The second pic is supposed to show the gloss in the polished/glazed paint... didn't really work though. I'll finish the car on the weekend and take some better pics.

Gonna try and get it sanded tomorrow and buffed.... As soon as I have good pics I'll some. Its supposed to be nice weather tomorrow. I'll take pics of the car outside before sanding and post those and then the after sanding/polishing pics.

I just finished painting the jambs today.

update..

Post by bob84 on March 2nd 2008, 9:19 pm

Here are a few update pics. This is the car, with 9 unsanded and un buffed coats of paint. I managed to get the car sanded down today, but no pics of the that. I plan on buffing the car tomorrow night.

Last pic of the hood is to show the difference between the unbuffed and buffed/polished paint (upper right of hood).

Oh, anyone have any ideas as to what I can clean the sanding crap and odd drop of paint off of my tires with?
