I know this is Blasphemy but.....

Post by bob84 on January 28th 2008, 6:45 pm

Has anyone sprayed their car with rustoleum. I'm seriously considering painting the vette with an hvlp gun. While I know the roller technique works, I'm thinking spraying is going to be much more time efficient. On that note, if you have sprayed,,, what mix of paint to thinner did you use; and how long between coats?

Thanks.

Finished my bodywork today; Should be sanding tomorrow,,,

spraying works great. 3 parts paint one part mineral spirits is a good mixture for fairly warm temps. The mix can be tweaked in either direction if necessary. Sprayed paint dries a little faster I re-coated after about 15-30 minutes but the can will have all of the re coat info

I didnt use rustoleum but all the work in my project thread was done with a hvlp. I used the 3 to 1 ratio also with brightside. I have been shooting 1 coat go smoke a cig. Come back and shoot a second, wait till dry and wetsand. Then repeat the process. I wouldnt call it blasphemy you are staying with the spirit of a inexpensive paint job.

Thanks guys,, haven't decided yet if I'm going to spray or not. I keep flip flopping. I did however wet sand my test pieces today, 800,1000,1500 rubbing compound and glaze.. gotta say not bad, quite empressed actually.

When i do my final wetsand I'll probably go to 2500 grit, and use my random orbit polisher (porter cable) to buff out the really fine scratches.

I was back at it tonight did 4 coats back to back. I had to bump the thinner a little. Temp was 64 and the paint was tacking so quick I could just keep going arround it with no runs.

Hey man there is nothing wrong with spraying. It's just cleaner and healthier to roll it on. Most people don't have a place to spray a car because of the overspray getting everywhere and having to breathe the fumes. Though the downfall to rolling is the time consumption. This forum is here to supply everyone with information. It's up to you to decide how you want to use it. The knowledge is out there. If it helps you out in any way then I feel like I've accomplished something by creating the site. By all means spray it. Good luck with it, I hope it turns out great. Keep us posted.

Just to clarify... many have mentioned a 3:1 mixture of paint to mineral spirits. Some have mentioned changing this mixture according to temperature. Which way do you go? If it is warmer, do you thin it more or less? I am probably going to paint with Rustoleum in the 50s or low 60s with an HVLP gun.

Thanks for your information.
