Just saying Hello

Post by Corpse~Kid on February 2nd 2008, 5:43 pm

I have been reading the forums for a while now and finally wanted to start my roll job. I'm sure I will have some questions along the way. So far this seems like the place to be if you are going to do the dirty deed............................the dreaded roll job. well just wanted to say Hi.

I am going to do a 95 jeep yj. I really want to do the burgandy color but i cannot find it anywhere so I think it's going to be black. The problem is the PO primed over the crappy red paint job that has clear coat peeling. I bought a wheel that goes on the end off a drill kinda like a scotch brite pad the removes the paint to bare metal rather quickly. So i guess I'll be doing that first.

Cool, a jeep. Don't forget to get some before pics. Smile
You can mix the paint, but it isn't as simple as red and black to make burgandy. A paint store should be able to help with a formula, then mix and test.
Them wheels work pretty good, I used one on my car trailer. Just be careful to not gouge the metal.

Should I strip it to the metal? If so do I have to prime it or can i just paint the bare metal? I just don't want the clear to peel under the new black.

I wouldn't strip to bare metal unless I had to. Just getting the clear off would be my goal. I would try to sand through the clear into the original paint.
If you do get the occational patch of bare metal you can paint over it without having to prime. Personally I would prime anyway but that is just me.

Hey welcome to the forums fellow Jeep owner. I have a CJ7. Let us know if theres anything you need. Also, it's not necessary to strip to bare metal just get all of the clear coat off and scuff it up really well with 220 then 400.
