I'll kick it off...

Post by Matt on December 8th 2007, 2:11 pm

Well my name is Matt and I'm from the great state of Kentucky. I have a 1995 Ford Ranger Splash which I painted using the roll on method. The procedure can be viewed under the Projects section of the forums. I started this forum so people can get together and get all of the help they need regarding this concept. Send it around to people you know so we can get more and more information on here. Enjoy the forums and let me know if your having any problems. Very Happy

Great Idea!

Post by Coconut Eater on December 8th 2007, 4:59 pm

This subject has outgrown moparts, and it's a great idea to have a site dedicated to this cheap method of painting. My name is Ken and I tried this method of painting recently when my 92 Nissan got squashed by a moving truck. The insurance company totalled it, but I bought it back from them for $250 and began reconstruction. Since the car has been in the family since new, I couldn't get rid of it (had only 89K on it). My son and I have since replaced the entire front end and have begun rolling. We're using Rustoleum Safety Red with a touch of yellow for an orangish-red look. It is slow going because of our work schedules, but once we're done I'm going to roll my old D100. I'm passing the car down to him; let's hope his college years won't destroy it! bounce

Awesome to hear man. Welcome to the site! I created it because I think it's grown enough to have it's own dedicated forum. Post pictures of your rides when your finished. tongue

Dave, and I'm a Hoosier exiled to Dayton, Ohio. Came across the original Paint on a Budget thread in Moparts when looking for help on a resto project.

I'm restoring a 74 Satellite and cloning it into a Roadrunner. The car was originally a Deep Sherwood Forest Green (Ugh) from factory but the previous owner spray painted it black orange peel. It has been a project and a half just to sand the black orange peel away and bite into the original paint. Sixty grit sandpaper does a good job biting into the crappy black and has exposed some sheet metal challenges.

So far, I stopped the guts of the work on the project to test the roller method on the trunk. I figured it would be a good learning tool: learn the paint method on a horizontal surface that has some vertical to it as well. I have been experimenting with micro flakes and this paint method, and I will post the results. Second coat looks good, will wet sand in the morning, take a pic, and add another coat.

Hello

My name is Dan. I recently finished my rollledon paintjob to the lower half of my '97 Escort, I left the top half the original color. Main reason for doing it was to repair a lot of rust. Canadian winters and way too much roadsalt took their toll Crying or Very sad I've been a long time fan of DIY mods. Being a machinist, I've fabbed several of my cars parts from scratch including shifter, full exhaust, and intake manifold. Also assembled and tuned a Megasquirt and built a wiring harness for it that's been running the car for 2 1/2 years.

Anyways that's enough talking about myself for now. Watch in the photos section in the next few days for pics and more details on my car.

Great job on the forum Matt! Easy to navigate, and looks like it's going to grow quickly. Everyone I've talked to about this form of painting is ready to try it.
