What am I doin wrong?

Post by Eddy on April 30th 2008, 10:02 pm

I've been working on my 91 Firebird for the past week and a half. I can't seem to get a decent coat of paint on it, much less two coats before wet sanding. Every day I end up sanding it all off and starting over. There are runs, air bubbles, and orange peel everywhere no matter what I do. I prepped the car by sanding it down with my palm sander using 120, then 220, then set sanding the whole car with 400. There are some spots that I took down to bare metal by accident due to the very thin factory paint.

I'm attempting to roll Rust-oleum Sunrise red gloss. I've been mixing it 50/50 with mineral spirits and I'm using the 4" white foam rollers. It's about 75-80* in the afternoon when I'm working on the car. Is my mixture off?

I'm also having trouble with roller tracks on the hood. I'm not pressing down hard with the roller either.

I'm really at my wit's end here. I've gone through 3 quarts of paint, almost a gallon on spirits, countless packs of sand paper and I still don't have a decent coat on it yet.

how thin are you applying it?
It really should look like crap the first few coats..lol
It should be so thin, you can see through it to whats underneath for the first 2-3 coats.

I think I might be putting it on too thick. I'll try again tomorrow after work. Does the orange peel "go away" with more coats, or do more coats just make it harder to get it out? I found another site online were a guy painted the whole car with a 4" foam brush. Supposedly, it left very little to no orange peel at all, also no roller tracks. I might give that a try.

depends on the mix.
Try 2 to 1 on paint mixture. and you sand smooth between every 2 coats.
As you paint, the "peel" gets less and less.

Well, I sanded the whole car down this afternoon. The roller method just isn't working for me. I mixed the paint 2:1 and sprayed about 8 light coats on the fenders with my Wagner Power Painter. It actually came out really nice. No drips or runs and it covered nicely. There is some slight peel, but I'm reasonably sure that I can get it out with a light wet sand. I think I'm just going to do the whole car like that 1 panel at a time.

Since I've got 8 coats on and it has covered all the spots well would it be safe to assume that I could wet sand and buff, or would I need to put a few more coats on?

If you wet sand, and all looks good,i would buff and enjoy Smile
If you see any spots after wet sanding, just give it a few more coats.
