How is everyone getting ride of the wet sanding scratches?

Post by RolledCivic on December 14th 2007, 1:33 am

What is everyone using to get rid of the wet sanding scratches? What tools and compounds?

I used 3m rubbing compound when I wetsanded with 2000 grit sand paper. Anything lower is going to be harder to remove.

huh not sure if I follow. I didn't have any problems with scratches. Make sure when your sanding you use PLENTY of clean water. Don't use water thats been sitting in a bucket for days or anything. You may have caught a small piece of dirt between the sandpaper and the surface. Usually if this happens the sandpaper will feel like it's rolling instead of sliding and will have a zipper sliding sound to it. What coat are you on? If they are fine scratches and your not too far into the project, the next few coats should fill them in. If it's your last coat I would try wetsanding again with a new sheet of high grit paper (1500-2000) and clean water and see if that takes them out. A lot of those imperfections will come out when you buff as well. Keep us posted on how things go hope

Matt,

Technically when you are wetsanding you are putting millions of fin scratches in to the paint creating a dull effect. I was just wondering what products everyone was using to buff the dullness and bring the shine back.

I'm on my 8th coat and have wet sanded after every 2 coats. I'm going to do a final wetsand to get rid of any of the last imperfections. Can you buff it out by hand? Or should I spring for the direct drive rotary buffer/sander?

Thanks,

Jonathan

I use a normal dish sponge and wrap the sand paper around it.

Also, i have running water directly from the hose that i sand with.

Make sure you're not pressing too hard when you sand, you want to buff with the paper, not grind.

I'm going to use meguiar's cleaning wax and an orbital buffer for my final step.

null has the idea. Remember your wanting to smooth out the finish so the softer you are with your final wetsanding stages the better. Try using the cross hatch sanding method with plenty of water and just let the sandpaper do the work. People also say they have good results using a circular motion while sanding.

when finished wetsanding between coats, do you wash the residue paint dust and then wait to dry to apply paint?

Does it hurt to use a sanding block instead of a sponge?

I've also wet sanded using a jitterbug sander with wet/dry paper. It really speeds up the process. As always, you should keep a squeegee handy to check progress.
