1987 Subaru Leone Sedan Brightside
Hi this is my 1987 Subaru Leone Sedan I am 16 and I live in Australia and this is my 1st car and it cost me a whole $50 off my nans next door neighbour. I am on my Learners and it had some rust problems so I was just gonna spray over them until I found out about the $50 roll on paint job. I have been researching and chosen to use Interlux Brightside Gloss White paint and also I can't get rust-oleum over here. The paint on its Ok I guess but I want it to shine when I drive it to school and university once I'm off my Learners. Because I'm a petrol head and can't settle with second best.

I am going to pick up some sand paper and supplies tonight and prep will start tomorrow.
Any advice along the way including hints and tips will be greatly appreciated.

What should I wipe my car down? Could I use a chamois to wipe the car down with before painting?

use a good wax & grease remover with a CLEAN rag. Then go over it again with a clean dry rag. It can never be "too clean".

Re: 1987 Subaru Leone Sedan Brightside
Here are the supplies I bought for painting I have some foam touchup brushes and some china bristles also. I was wondering is the roller is the right one to use.
I got International Brightside Paint , International Enamel Thinner #1, Foam Brushes, Enamel Roller and extra covers and some sandpaper (600-1200) and masking tape because I couldn't afford the blue painters tape I also have some china bristle brushes unused laying around the house.

If there is anything I missed could you please remind me so I can pick it up tommorrow. Thanks

Re: 1987 Subaru Leone Sedan Brightside
The rollers I got are acrylic and I think have a little but of wool in them does that matter because all you guys had foam rollers.
If I missed anything just point it out. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

not sure on the rollers you have (cant see them very well), but you really need foam ones - not only for the debris other types leave, but they don't paint as smooth either

Re: 1987 Subaru Leone Sedan Brightside
I exchanged the acrylic roller and covers and got some high density foam rolllers 100mm/3.9inchs. Are these OK.

Just reply and tell me if I need anything else.
I start painting on Monday. (Have to work tommorrow)

Ya.....those are the ones you want!
And i hate to tell you, but if you don't use the blue tape, its going to bleed under it.guaranteed
You really need to try and get that, you will have a mess if you don't.

Re: 1987 Subaru Leone Sedan Brightside
they all bleed underneath. Painters tape wasn't designed for this type thing.
But it your taping over fresh paint for stripes and stuff, pulling the paint is a bigger worry than clean up work
And I think my official position is now replace the tape after every coat. You can clean up much easier when its wet. My paint inspired a guy with a antique tractor - we are pulling the tape after every coat and its so much better than even doing it once a day after 2 rolled coats. We can wipe off problems with a paper towel and q-tips

sence your doing it outside make sure you use isoprophil alcohol im sure i spelled that isoprophil wrong *rubbing alcohol* to clean your surface really good
don't get discouraged on the first few coats mines at 2second coat now and drying, looks a bit uneven on the paint but it should level it self out in a few more coats
good luck !

Re: 1987 Subaru Leone Sedan Brightside
Sorry about not putting up any more photos but computer was broke also I have a question.
Hey
I am finished wetsanding and rolling but I am unsure on what to do next.
I wetsanded up to 2500grit and it is smooth and dull.
Now do I use a buffing compound and if so what grit would you recommend?
Then do I use a polishing compound and if so what type?
Or do I just use rubbing compound then normal polish or
should I just use the polishing compound instead of the cutting compund.
Any Help or advice would be great.
I will post some more photos soon

I rubbed it out with turtle wax rubbing compound, then used maguires ultimate compound. Thats when the shine really came out

Thanks for the reply.
Do you think I should get a orbital buffer or something like that
or do it by hand

Re: 1987 Subaru Leone Sedan Brightside
If you did a final sand with 2500, that paint will shine right up with a POLISHING compound..Skip the heavier stuff, it will just take off paint you don't need to take off.
I use 3M products and a standard orbital grinder/polisher.
