Rustoleum paint job.

Post by kKkInGsRuLeEe on September 27th 2009, 8:12 pm

I am going to be attempting a rustoleum paint job on my car shortly and I want a bit of help before I start.

I have heard that rustoleum paint can go either over bare metal or over a sanded down base coat paint job.

My situation is that I have some paint chipping occurring in a couple of places on my car so I obviously can't leave the base coat on otherwise the paint chips will show up right?

Is my only option to sand the entire car down?

Thanks to anyone that can help.

you can featheredge them, or use glazing putty to cover them. Just remember that any imperfection looks 100 times worse when its all shiny

agreed, taking the extra time and effort in your prep will pay off in the end.

Do what RoboGeek said and he is right about the prep work. If you can see it before the paint job you WILL see it after. Also make sure that it is just chips and not delamation where it is lifting. Sometimes clear coat will come unstuck from the color coat and look like pits or it will kind of change color in areas. When this happens you have to take it all off back to good paint.
You will have to sand the whole car tho, just not all down to metal, Primer is still recommended on bare metal and the undercoat should be all one color because it will influence the top coat ( dark primer/white paint will be different than light primer/white paint). I painted a truck and there was 2 colors of primer on the hood and after 4 coats of metallic red you could tell where the edged of the primer spots were (at least I could).
