Cheapo orbital sander?

Post by funcrew on November 7th 2009, 3:04 am

Would a cheap harbor freight orbital palm sander be useful for doing any of the body work and/or paint prep? If so, how do you attach wet/dry sandpaper to the sander?

I used a cheap palm sander for feathering, and the initial sanding. I inherited a car that was nothing but black orange peel, with a lot of problems, so it was just easier to get 400 grit sandpaper and a palm sander and go down to the original paint...and sometimes...beyond!

For the final paint layer, I used a simple sanding block with wet/dry sandpaper, 400/800/1000/1200 and that was all by hand..(okay, some parts still is...good thing about t his method, you see a blemish....sand it down a bit, roll on a little bit more).
