Good luck with the new paint!
My advice is to make it too thin and roll it on your hood. For me, the hood was the easiest part to roll since it was square and not many hard curves. What a pain in the you know what to to resand orange peel- MUCH easier to roll on another light coat. I know I sound like a broken record but, the paint cannot be too thin! It should barely cover the old paint and will take many coats to cover. the idea is to let the this coat self level for you- that means less sanding later. Once you master the hood you can do the roof, then trunk, and by then you will get the hang of it and can do the rest of the car's hard curves.

The metal bar has been coated in the paint I will be using. It is very bright and very lusterless.

Re: 2002 Ford Focus SE - Top Secret Brand Paint

Post by stang_krazy on March 11th 2010, 6:03 pm

Yeah, I believe this is going to be a great year for us!

Have a rusted passenger side door on the bottom part of my jeep and going to go ahead and do some reading and help from you guys to start doing the body work in a week or so I hope and then roll-on some black (color of my cherokee) just on the bottom edge of my door to see if after 8 or so light coats and lots of wet sanding and then polishing it out to see if I can match/blend it in with my clear coat paint. If so then going to do the hood header panel and roof.

Any thoughts or ideas about this roll-on paint blending it in with the factory clear coat paint.

Don't know about blending to clear coat. I have read on painting forums that it is possible but they recommend to go to a seam or body crease or edge.

First date, wet sand, I gotta see this. Make sure you post pictures or a video lol!

4 inch Fine Finisher foam roller. Foam Pro is a brand if that helps.
As for sand paper I start off with 400 after the first two coats and progress up from there.

From my understanding, your first sanding after your 2nd coat will start with the 600 grit(which you have down)-then after your 4th coat you will need to sand with 800 grit(which you don't have down in your to get list) and then the 1000 grit(also have down) after the 6th coat.

Also if you have to reapply tape after every 2 coats will 2 rolls be enough? And you could go to a dollar store or biglots and get a good deal on a package of the foam brushes.

Do not go cheap on the foam rollers unless you really like wet sanding. Buy good quality rollers and if you can get them for cheap that's great but I don't think you will find quality rollers at the dollar store.

like I said before you can get 6" foam rollers too - they worked better for me. They fit on the 4" handle too

You can get either size at lowes. They are white, and have rounded edges and come in 4 packs or contractors packs of 12 - get those
