Need opinions for rims

Post by 63Falconconvert on March 5th 2010, 2:10 pm

I have been thinking about changing the wheels on my Falcon. Right now I'm using the stock 13" steel rim with a spoked wheel cover. The problem with that is that 90% of the 63 Falcon convertibles have spoked wheel covers so it's not "different".
I have a full set of 13" aluminum slot rims that I polished up but I'm having trouble finding the center caps. My 3rd choice is a Ford dog dish and trim ring. Last choice is to find 4 14" 4-lug Mustang rims, then my hubcap choice is endless.
So I'm looking for opinions from my fellow rollers.

slots wouldn't be too bad.
Polish them up and paint the inside of the slots a contrasting color?

If you are going to change sizes go to something bigger than a 14 inch because it is getting harder to find the smaller size tires which use to be the standard sizes.

15's don't fit very well on the round body Falcons, 14 is pushing it

What about fiquring out the back spacing to use a 15" rim so you could go from there and maybe find some used or factory type wheels that could fit.

There was a way to go about finding out how big or what size you could go, I'm thinking something about using a string or simular and add alittle weight on the end of it and use some tape to tape it just to the outside edge of your fender-lipand let hang down.

Then use a tape measure and measure from the drum plate or your hub to the string, that fiqures up for the width of the rim to level point of the fender lip and then fiqure how much back-space will be needed for fender and tire clearence.

I may not be a 100% correct but there's something I remembered about this I seen in hot rod/car craft?

I'll try to do some research on this later tonight, pressed for time right now.

there are 2 problems, first there just isn't a lot of room to stuff a 15 in the wheel well and not rub when you turn the corner, second being my car is a 6 cyl there are only 4 lugs per wheel. So my choice is limited. The early 6 cyl Stangs had 14" 4 bolt rims and with the right wheel cover they look good.

there are places that will fill and redrill hubs and axles for 5 bolt.. You can also get adapters.

Maybe try here?

http://www.daytonwirewheels.com/

Some nice REAL wire wheels would set you apart

lowriders love the 13" rims and dayton has brought them back

Steel wheels with the chrome outer trim ring and the polished stock falcon hub cap would be my choice with the wheels themselves painted silver. That way they would almost look like chrome wheels or paint the wheel and the letters f o r d the same color as the interior. Of course this setup would almost require white sidewall tires. How about chrome wheels with the chrome spiders they used to have. I saw some of those in a auto parts store a while back so I know you can still get them

Lowrider 100 spoke wheels might be ok if you put a hydro system on it so you can "lay frame" Laughing.

Everybody had slots back in the day and I personally never cared for them but polished up and color cordinated they would be ok but not my first choice.

4 bolt really limits it.. but I know if you check out some wheel places that pattern will match something. You might have to go with a real low profile 15" tire though

Actually it all depends on the look you are going for. The wheel covers you have now say factory upgrade stock to me. Slots say race car and beauty rings and baby moons with white walls say custom. I assume you are satified with the shape your car is in so about the only way you can project an image is with tires and wheels so it's your choice. just my cents but since I came from the lead sled era (lol), you know how I feel. Angel hair and fuzzy dice rule!!!

I like the slots, but that's me.
They make replacement center caps for them, I know I've seen them before.
I'm currently engaged in the same sort of decision making process for wheels on my Dart.
The paint and body are in rather rough shape, so wheels are the only thing I've got to help set the car off...

I don't know if my rims have a way for the cap to lock on, being a newer rim - but I'd like some old school on my new school ride

The older steel wheels had 3-4 little "lumps" around the center raised part that held the hubcaps (dog dish style) on. I'm not up on cavalier wheels but if yours don't have them maybe you can find some older ones in a wrecking yard. They will have interchange books. 63falcon could do the same thing to cross reference 4 hole wheels for his car. hope

yeah.. I know the lumps well... lol

there was some olds cutlass/cierra center caps that look good with a trim ring - but nearly impossible to find - they came on wheels that looked a lot like the 70's camaro stock wheels

I think the slots with the inside painted white would look good on that old falcon.

Yup, I am doing a 98 Camaro I will make a thread once I get the primer sanded down on it. I really love your falcon, you did a good job on it. I just wish my brother would not have sold the 62 falcon we had. those cars have so much potential.
