5"ORBITAL OR 1/4 SHEET SANDER

Post by stang_krazy on March 18th 2010, 11:01 pm

Which one do you guys like and prefer, pros & cons.

I've been looking at a 1/4 sheet sander because of price and you can go to wally world -auto parts stores -ect, and get some sand paper, so to me that's a big plus.

On the other hand the only time you use one of these sanders is for knocking down your old paint good enough for your roll on paint to have a good surface to stick too or if your doing any body work, and use a 3-M sanding block to do all the wet sanding between coats?

Today I ran across a DW421 5'' orbital for $10.00, didn't have the dust bag with it and was pretty dirty, bought it and took some of it apart and cleaned it and it seams to work great. Should I get a 1/4 sheet sander sometime to see wich one I perfer or is one better for this or that or just preference?

Stang,
Everyone has there preference. I like sanding almost everything by hand. I have an air DA that I only use when I want to get a panel right down to bare metel to either weld or fix a dent. When I was doing a lot of painting I would start with a 150 grit 5"round self stick paper and wrap it around a semi stiff foam pad and block the entire car by hand. Then if there wasn't any body work, dents etc, (which was almost never) then I would use 220 grit 5" round and block the car again by hand. I personally never liked electric/air sanders when it came to scuffing paint. They always left deep swirl scratches and seem to make more work then it was worth. Like I said if you ask 10 guys you will get 10 different answers. It's one of those things you have to figure out by trial and error.
Here is a link to a post from the Falcon forum that I'm on.
