1993 Jeep Wrangler Gets The Roller
I'm painting my Jeep gloss black. I started this project 3 weeks ago and have been plugging away, most of the time so far has been bodywork, lots of it! I only have photos from my phone, but i figured all you photo lovers needed your fix, so here we go....
this is the jeep before, clear peeling off.

Closer shot of the hood

Rust holes in both fenders. (I will post later on how I fixed them.

Sanded with 320 to remove clear then primed.

Sanded primer with 400 wet and rolled on first coat

So now I am on my third coat and things are looking good. I will post many more photos and add in many of the steps and tricks that have gotten me to where I am right now....I'm just beat and need to get some sleep.
I posted in another forum here but figured I would ask the same question. I seem to be getting lint in my paint. I thought it was from a sweatshirt I was wearing but i still got it after i changed into a different shirt. I am washing and drying the jeep with only sponges and using a tack cloth before each coat. Has anyone else had this problem? if so how hard was it to wet sand out?
Thanks everyone, I will post more tomorrow

I posted in your other thread.. I think you may be using the wrong rollers. You need the high density white foam rollers - not the furry brownish looking ones

Hey robo, I am using the right rollers. The lint is very light, I think it must be something floating around in the garage. I am going to roll the jeep out tomorrow and clean the floors really good.

then its probably not a problem - I even had ash from a trash fire land while I pushed the car out to dry. Looked horrid, thought it was ruined, and it wet sanded out with no effort.
does it wet sand out ok?

Re: 1993 Jeep Wrangler Gets The Roller
looks good so far.....heck I have wet sanded mosquitos out of high dollar paint jobs that I did. I was spraying this 68 Firebird and this bug landed on the hood that was as big as a bat, well maybe not that big...lol but just let him dry in the paint, wet sanded, shot a few more coats and you couldn't tell he was ever there.

Re: 1993 Jeep Wrangler Gets The Roller
My Jeep project has been a busy 3 months. Here is a list of all the other stuff I have done to it:
clutch plate
throw out bearing
piolt Bearing
clutch master cylinder
clucth slave cylinder
hydraulic clutch line
crank position sensor
radiator
water pump
t-stat
t-stat housing
fan clucth
fan belt
upper radiator hose
lower radiator hose
both heater hoses
spark plugs
igintion wires
igintion cap
rotor
power steering presure line
power steering return line
all 4 break lines
rear break hose
both front break hoses
rear universal joints
transfer case tail shaft housing and seal
oil pain seal
rear main seal
value cover gasket
body mounts (PITA)
After this weekend (i hope) I will have the rest of the project done
new bestop super top with tinted windows
new stainless door and hood hinges
new stainless hood accessories
new stainless mirrors
right rear frame repair
And lets not forget about the best part...and new paint job
I have about 5000 into the jeep, it is a 3rd car and i treat it that way. I could have had it painted but i would rather do it mayself. Plus i dont have to worry about scratching it because if I do it should be an easy fix.

Re: 1993 Jeep Wrangler Gets The Roller
I think it is going to be a weekend toy. I am visiting family for an "extended" stay in Vermont and I bought it off my brother for 800.00. I am going to drive it back home (Las Vegas) at the end of April, should be a fun ride.... I have done it a couple times.
I have a BMW X5 and a Lexus IS300 for daily driving, plus my ZX9R ( sports bike) if i feel the need to let it rip

Re: 1993 Jeep Wrangler Gets The Roller
Hey buckz
Take chains (1 for each side) and remove a bolt/nut from frame and put the bolt through the chain link and let hang down to the ground.
You may have to grind or sand the rust and/or dirt from frame so your chains will get good contact to the bare metal and then just let the chain touch the ground.
It's also a little trick some of the ambulance services's do, that's why alot of times when one goes by listen for a chain dragging underneath(just enough to make contact with the ground), because if they get static in any of their equipment bad things can happen.
Hope that helps!

Re: 1993 Jeep Wrangler Gets The Roller
More photos after "3 1/2" coats! I wet sanded the lint out. I ended up grounding the jeep and other parts with chain to it did seem to help with my lint problem...Thanks to everyone for the suggestion!
I'm going to post these photos and get back to work on a couple rusty "under the Jeep" parts that I would like to clean up while I wait for the paint to dry....it is going to be a little warmer today, so I may get 2 coats on it.
I will say that I have 100% coverage after 4 coats with no real orange peal, but keep in mind that the Jeep was primered dark gray.
Enjoy the photos, many more to come

yup.. I remember that dull orange peel look! Thats gonna look good all sanded - and jeeps are easy cuz they are so flat. You'll be able to get it looking like a mirror.
Are you using any hardener?

Re: 1993 Jeep Wrangler Gets The Roller
I am not using any hardner. I have time so wait between coats and sanding so it is not a problem...but I do plan on putting it back together this Sunday. I am going to just apply the final 2 coats and drive it to Vegas, I will sand and polish after it has been out in the sun for a month or so.

Re: 1993 Jeep Wrangler Gets The Roller
Quick question.... I wet sanded down the doors and fenders to get the lint out after only one coat (with 3 under it), the rest of the Jeep looked great. But now I only have one coat on these parts and 2 of the rest of the Jeep. Should I just put one more coat on the whole jeep and wet sand so I do not have a blending problem or just paint the parts with one coat? I'm sure it is not going to make a big difference either way but wanted to get feedback. Thanks!

Re: 1993 Jeep Wrangler Gets The Roller
I think its always best to have the same amount of paint everywhere. That way , when you sand and buff it will all look the same. If there is less paint in some areas you have a chance of going through a couple of coats and ending up with that part looking "mottled"(sp).

Re: 1993 Jeep Wrangler Gets The Roller
I finished the 5th coat and it is looking good. A little grey haze in it, but that should come out with the polish. My plan is to do one more coat, wet with 1500 then 2 more coats and drive it to Vegas and let it bake in the sun for 30 days....do you guys think it will be ok to leave the last 2 coats on without sanding for 30 days and to drive it 2700 miles? It will sit for about 2 weeks before the trip
