Re: 1972 Dodge Charger project

Hi All!

I've made some progress on the Charger. I worked all week getting the engine bay ready for primer. I didn't have the tools or space to pull the motor and tranny. Whomever had it previously spray bombed it black. I pretty much pulled everything off I could. I sprayed the primer, but plan on rolling/brushing the top coat. If it's painted the same color of the car I think it would look way better. Unfortunately, I didn't take any pics after it was sanded. Anyway, here's some pics.

Before:

After:

Color it will be.

I hope to get some color on it soon. I'm pretty happy with it so far. I've been waiting to do paint work and filler at night. It's been pretty hot and humid here. Thanks for looking!

I got my first coat of color on the pass side inner fender. I figured I would start there since it really isn't seen. Give me some practice. I will post pics when I get the first coat done on the whole engine bay.

I ended up getting an hvlp gun from harbor freight. It worked well for this. It's not perfect, but better than it was. I will get more pics when it dries and I put everything back on.

I had my compressor set at 50psi. I played with the fan shape, fluid setting and pressure from the gun to get nice small "dots" (or whatever you want to call them) from the sprayer.

Pretty much done. I have some wiring to figure out. There's a couple light spots. But, I'm pleased with the results.

You're making some great progress. Will you be rolling or sparaying the exterior?

40 year old wires are not fun to deal with, especially under a dash. You're saving your self a lot of head aches by changing them.

I've been a little slow working on the Charger. But, I got all my welding done on both fenders. Both insides are painted and ready to go back on the car.

Inside fender painted. (sprayed)

Splash shield back on.

Hopefully sooner! I've got 2 other cars I'm wanting to get in the garage. I've been looking into some heating for the winter.

Got both fenders back on. They sure do take up a lot of room!

My repair on the front lip. I got some 'all metal' filler to finish it off.

I'm using air craft stripper to strip the hood. It has some bad repairs on it.

After stripped and wiped down.

After applying a rust-converting etching cleaner

Primed

I still have to fill a couple spots. Also, I need to drill holes for the hood emblems and for hood pins.

Nice attention to detail under the hood. That is going to look really sweet when it's done.

Man do I wish I had a garage! Especially a heated one.

I will be jamb-ing out mine pretty soon.
