2001 Dodge Neon R/T rolling underway
Have been doing a lot of reading up on this, and decided to take the plunge. Maaco wanted two grand to do the body work and change the paint color. I think not, so 50 dollar paint job it is....

Re: 2001 Dodge Neon R/T rolling underway
I'm not use if I got the mixture right. I did it thin , but got a massive amount of bubbles. They seem to be going away. I figure for the first coat its not bad. I'll and the second coat tomorrow morning, I'll wet sand it later that afternoon, and do the third coat. I've done quite a bit of reading and seems like I'm doing it right so far. I'll post pictures everyday so everyone can see my progress and give me some pointers if they see me doing something crazy

Re: 2001 Dodge Neon R/T rolling underway
Ok day 2. Did some more wet sanding on the car. Got the second coat layed down on the hood and trunk lid. I also got the front bumper wet sanded and the first coat layed on it. This afternoon ill wet sand the hood and trunk and add the third coat. I'll also get the rest of the car sanded and get the dings with some bondo and sand em smooth. So far so good. For anybody that has been on the fence about trying this. Do it. It's a lot of fun, and a lot of work. You'll save a bunch of money and if you take your time, I've seen lots of these paint jobs come out great. I Finally had just decided to do it and am very happy I have finally got underway. I can't wait to see the finished product. I figure it will take me another 4-5 days to get the final coat on. Here are some pictures of the car this morning.

This bumper is a complete pain to get smooth coats on. Acually all the body lines make this a little more difficult than I was hoping for. Oh well, to late now, all I can do is keep trucking along.

Re: 2001 Dodge Neon R/T rolling underway
This is not quite as fun as when I started. LOTS OF WORK!! I got some bondo work done of the fender, and put a coat on the spoiler. I need to head up to Lowe's to pick up another couple of quarts of paint, sandpaper, and some 2" brushes. I think I'm done for the day, this will really take it out of you.

Looking for some feed back. All I have to go on is what I have read, and pictures from this site. Tips are greatly apprieciated.

Ok, so I did a little more, now I'm am beat. I'll be glad if I never have to see another piece of sand paper again in my life. This is how she sits now, I may do some more tomorrow if I am not too tired.

It's just a little bit hot out today. I still need to get the adhesive off the sides where I removed the side molding and dodge logos.

Hang in there man, just remember you are trading your labor for cash.
I have about 250.00 in our paint job, but it would have cost at least 6000 to 8000 to have a body shop do the same work I've done.
I'll take the long days with the sandpaper every time.

AGH!!! Too late to stop now. Yeah the labor is borderline, but still worth saving the 2 g's. I got everything sanded, and layed paint on the whole car. The parts that are going to be exposed to the most sun and rocks got a couple extra coats. My fingers have blisters! The bondo work I did isn't top notch (completely smooth) but for my first try and learning how to use it I'm happy this time around. It's supposed to rain here sometime in the next couple days, so I'll let it bake in the sun and wait for the rain to pass before adding more coats. Here she is so far.....

Re: 2001 Dodge Neon R/T rolling underway
Looks great 10 feet away, not so much up close. I'm going to wet sand the whole thing with 600 grit in preperation for coats 4-5, then again with 1000, 2 more coats and then 2000. Nearing the finish line, and I'll be glad when I am done. Really not something you can do in a day, or two. Still happy I decided to do it, looks much better than the red.

Here is a side by side of the red and white.

Looking good. One good thing about painting like this is you can go back ans perfect your body work later at your own speed and repaint as you go.

Here are a couple interior shots, painted the roof and pillars black, and re-carpeted the speaker deck.

Well this is pretty difficult. I've got some orange peel, so looks like it's back to sanding. I'm not as excited about this as when I first started. It is a huge amount of work. Getting the mixture right is still giving me trouble, I think I made it too thin this time. I haven't quite hit my groove with the roller yet, but I guess I'm getting practice

Re: 2001 Dodge Neon R/T rolling underway
My r/t works great as a daily driver. I bougt an 05 srt4, it was a beast, but the turbo lag drove me nuts, so it went back to the lot. I'm looking at an 03 cobra, it's so much more fun to drive and is soooo much faster than the srt

It's looking really good. Orange peel... I was parked next to a newer mustang that had a lot of orange peel from the factory. I've seen a lot of other makes that are that way too. The work will pay off and more than likely look better than factory. Be happy it's a smaller car too! I'm going to have some muscles by the time I'm done with the Charger... lol.

Re: 2001 Dodge Neon R/T rolling underway
I did learn that a 50/50 mix on the paint did not work at all for me. Paint just ran everywhere. Went a little thicker and made a world of difference. Not sure if I would paint another car like this, just depends on the car I guess.

Well, at least you gave it a shot and had fun trying. Most people wouldn't have even tried. I give you
for the effort.
