Cant sand it uniform

Post by taffy25 on May 18th 2010, 1:39 pm

No matter what i try i cant get it to sand flat, i keep ending up going right through the paint, what the hell am i doing wrong here?

I use a hard block and and squeegee to dry.

Im mixing 50/50 not getting any excess bubbles, lays smooth and looks nice, havent got a clue where im going wrong.

Should i try adding more coats between sanding or a thicker mixture?

Thanks in advance, Taff.

I never use a hard block to wet sand. I use a 1/2" think soft pad made by 3M for wet sanding. A hard block will take to much paint off.

What grit paper are you using? Should be 800 at least and get smoother as you go.

been 800 since coat two, im now on coat 5, its like the layers of paint i put on arent thick enough, the small specks of orange peel end up going through the the paint below.

Yesterday i went at it extremely slowly with some 1200 grit and was litterly wiping it off with a squeegee every 3 strokes and still went back through to the last coat, the orange peel just opens up back to the unsanded coat below.

Got it figured, i laid a very thick coat of paint on a few panels, its orange peeled and looked nasty, but i can rub this down nice and flat.

Not sure why but 50/50 isnt working for me, its more like 70% paint 30% thinner

It should be thin (the coat) but maybe you rolled it out way too much. You know, just enough to leave color but no substance. Anyway, that would be my guess as to the cause of the problem.
