After wetsanding - hazy residue?

Post by Zaose on May 31st 2010, 3:01 pm

Greetings all,

New here, just started to paint my 300zx after seeing the big ol thread over at moparparts

I've done my first wetsanding phase, and after wards hosed the car down, then used a tack cloth, then wiped with mineral spirits....

As I was putting on the next coat, I noticed a haze over the paint, and ran my hand over it and could see my fingers get covered with some residue - old paint or dried mineral spirits or...? My paint is white, so I couldn't tell.

What is the correct procedure to wetsand and post-sanding to prepare for next coat? Is my last coat "screwed" because of this? It appears ok right now.

Thanks in advance!

IMHO, do not use mineral spirits to wipe over the Rustoleum, use denatured alcohol. The mineral spirits will soften the paint you already applied.

I've been painting for over 40 years and all I do is a good wash with soapy water and just before paint, a wipe down with a tack rag. I messed up one time and used lacquer thinner as a wipe down. What a mess. I figured it would evaporate quick, right? well , it did but left some chemicals on the primer that lifted my new paint about 24 hours later and I had to sand the WHOLE thing off, including primer. Denatured alcohol works good also but water is cheaper.

My only reason for denatured alcohol is because I tend to run my bare hand over the sanded area looking for rough spots. The denatured alcohol will make sure my skin oils don't introduce fish-eye to the next layer of paint.
