1975 Opel Ascona - Spray with ACE Rust Stop
Been wanting to try this for some time now. Read about it about 4 years ago and I have played with some spraying earlier this year so going to give it a try. Right now I am working on a hood. My old hood is in sad shape with some rust through. A friend gave me another hood so this is my project for now. If it turns out OK I will be painting the whole car.
The hood given to me had set out in the weather for some time, but it is in better shape than my current hood. There is some small dings and some rust pitting on the rear ledge from sitting in the dirt. I used some POR-15 on these areas and now I have painted the bottom side with gloss black and today I sprayed primer on. I am using ACE Rust Stop primer and it laid on great with good coverage with a 3-1 mix using a cheap air brush from harbor freight.

A shot of the hood with first coat of primer. Still need to sand and fix dents and pits.

Well I guess that would depend on our end results. I am feeling pretty good about it now, but only time will tell.

Once I primed and sanded all the small stuff I ground the larger dents out and applied bondo this is the first time I had good luck using bondo.

Bondo sanded.

Reprimed sanded and spot putty. One more coat of primer after this

$14.99 Harbor Freight detail sprayer and $2.99 water trap. I have a trap on the compressor thought a little extra protection would be good though. Gun worked awesome.

Hood after 4 coats of paint. I used ACE Rust Stop satin black for the flat hood look. I sprayed in direct sun to keep the bugs off after having a bug issue in the morning. I did two coats back to back and then waited 1 hour and then two more coats.

Old hood.

New hood installed.

Whoops, I forgot to mention that it was suppose to be dull. I used ACE Rust Stop satin black for the flat hood look. Trying for the period European Rally car look when done. Fix it in comments above. George.
