base coat or go??

Post by $uperJoe on June 7th 2010, 3:47 pm

i have a gmc safari van that is a metalish light blue from the factory. the plan is to paint the top red and the bottom gloss black. do i need a base coat of white to make the red as bright as possible or just keep adding layers? also what color should i paint first?
thanks in advance

Well..........yes and no. It was a old trick with custom painters to have a white undercoat to make the top color pop more. It reallu isn't necessary tho just to paint. I always like to have the entire car the same color tho before I start and that is usually a light primer gray (there always seems to be body work). The black really dosen't need a base coat for coverage tho.

I would paint the top first just because its higher up than the black and any drips will able to be addressed easier with black over the red down low rather than black splatter up above. I hope you understand what I ment.

I would think 10-12 coats would cover pretty good so I would say no , you won't.

Body work is easy Laughing Sand it down to bare metal, pound it out to close to where you want it, spread bondo , sand, primer and paint. See, that was easy wasn't it.
Actually anyplace you want to put filler, the paint has to be removed first (small parking lot dings, etc). Larger dents and creases require a little more effort with a hammer and dolly but for just minor scrapes and rock chip type stuff you can just put glaze (comes in a tube) over it.

Glaze can go over paint. I have put bondo on up to 3/4in thick before without problems but it was in several layers. We took some out of a chopped 53 chevy one time that was almost 2in thick and held up for at least the 12 years we knew about. I wouldn't recommend that thick tho.lol

Joe, the thick areas I did was deep creases that I could not get out. I wouldn't put it over 3/8 in thick on a large area but as far as I figure since I have been using bondo since 1960 or so and have not had any problems with that thickness, then you should be ok also.

For the first four coats, when the sun was on the sides it made the paint look grey on mine (was silver you can see the old pics on the other forum joe) but i already did the front end black and that was fine.

Now at coat 6 though it all looks the same in the sun.

Only thing i can say about filler, is leave a dent a dent just knock it out till its shallow, i have seen people knock out dents till they have metal sitting proud and then try to fill it Shocked .
