New to the forum

Post by SWishathesweet on July 21st 2010, 7:25 pm

I will be doing 2 projects. I will be doing a gray 1993 del Sol and a black 1990 Nissan 240sx. I will be doing the same process as the Mustang that was done on here. Been reading alot and trying to figure out how long it will take to apply the paint in this summer heat and how long each coat will take before the next one can be laid down.

Welcome,
the air temperature as well as the humidity are major factors in how fast the paint dries. The drier the air the faster the dry time. The way to adjust for the humidity level is, the lower the humidity the higher the ratio of mineral spirits or paint mix. Where I live it usually is very low humidity and I can apply anywhere from two to four coats a day depending on how much sanding I need to do between every two coats. I usually use a 50/50 mix of paint to Mineral Spirits on drier days and when the humidity picks up I go 60/40 on the mix of paint and Mineral Spirits. I find it best to take it slow, every time I have rushed any aspect of these paint jobs I find myself spending more time correcting a mistake I made from rushing the job.
As for you color choice a gray, I have seen the regular Rust-Oleum gray used and it came out looking like battleship gray while I have also seen a good example of a dark gray used on a VW bug on this site. You can achieve the dark gray by mixing in some black with the gray.
