Paint rolling or brushing deep dish alloy wheels: Advice me!

Post by Kokain on July 26th 2010, 7:11 pm

Hey guys, new member here! Iíve been searching and reading a lot about roll on paint jobs and accidently found somebody made a forum about it. This is excellent news and Iíve tried to register as fast as I can because I have few questions about painting aluminium wheels for track use.

This is the only topic I havenít seen and neither google managed to help me. What do you think about trying to brush or roll epoxy primer on to some deep dish 16x9j I recently acquired? The wheels are sandblasted and they will be sprayed by a professional in colour, after Iíve chosen weather to etch prime by spray can or use a foam brush or roller to prime them beforehand. You advice will help me a lot!

Just have the professional prime them. You don't want to prime then with something that will be incompatible with the color coat.

Alright that's not exactly the reply I was after. Never the less I decided to etch primer because it will be a lot easier to do it quickly as time is of concern. On the other hand I will have some old set of alloys that needs refurbishing and those need painting on a budget. It will be some funky colour like red, white, green... I haven't decided. Would they come out any good if I try to brush/roll them with Enamel paint? Nobody has ever painted wheels that's why I'm asking if there is a reason so I can get a good idea if I should even try it. I can use spray cans obviously but paint chips way too easy, and although I don't mind re touching after 6 months this will be more like every 1 month.

It probably wouldn't be any harder, or worse, than doing my aluminum valve cover!

Thanks Jim I will try as I have nothing to loose Smile Out of interest you did the entire rocker cover with a foam brush or roller too?

I did it with a little of both. I brushed the tight spots, and rolled the flat spots. The roller will make a smoother finish, but if you think it well, the brush is pretty good too.
