1994 Ford Probe Black

Post by zeconcepts on September 8th 2010, 8:24 pm

Hello all, new here, but did some research and decided to roll my probe gt! I have no pics of my bodywork, but I have some decent experience with body work, so my prep is good to go! Im using rusto pro gloss black, ratio of 1:1 (maybe a pinch thicker)of paint and mineral spirits, and high density foam rollers. I've been wet sanding every other coat so far with 600. I am on coat 6 as of now. from now on i will go to 800 grit for the next sand, then 1200 for the next, and 2000 for my final. I am actually going for 10 coats for depth. Heres some pics of my progress! This forum rocks!

I wet sanded with 800 after #6 and switched to penetrol at 2:1 with just a shot extra penetrol and I LOVE PENETROL! Air bubbles were gone in a flash with no blowing, thicker coat with no runs (even though I always do a one way LIGHT upstroke afterwards to be sure). Heres coat #7!

Did the final wet sand with 2000, buffed with UC and W7000 pad twice. Great shine, but have issues with swirl marks from a distance. I went and got some meguiars swirl x, but it only seems to dull the finish...Anyone with ideas on the right way to use swirl-x or get rid of the swirl marks?

Go back over it but keep your buffing wheel as flat to the surface as possible.

I have a quick question. When you say that you mixed the "penetrol at 2:1." Does that mean you used two parts penetrol to one part paint? Also, how much penetrol and paint did it take you to put 8-10 coats of paint on your car? I'm getting ready to do my 1967 Chevy Impala 4dr and I want to make sure I buy enough supplies before I start my project. Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike, Its 2 parts paint to one part penetrol, then maybe just a "shot" more penetrol. Keep in mind that I started out with mineral spirits instead of penetrol, which Would have taken about 8-10 coats, however, switching to penetrol, he coat depth is achieved in about 6 coats, and thats how far Ive been going with the other panels on the car. I went through one quart on paint for the entire side plus rear decklid of the car, two quarts will finish my car. One quart of penetrol also. Also gab some mineral spirits for roller/tray cleanup, and denatured alchohol for wiping after wet sanding between coats.
