Another Ranchero project

Post by Squire Cobra Jet on September 22nd 2010, 3:39 am

While visiting my Parents, I obtained a 1978 Ranchero 500from long time family friends which they have owned since new and was the parts runner for the family's auto repair/smog inspection business. It is in good condition except for the paint and some minor rust issues as it has been sitting in the Ocean air. Since I was not expecting this I will not be able to get to it until I return to visit my Parents next month. I am thinking since it has been Yellow to go with a similar color combination as I have used on my 1973 Mercury Cougar Convertible.

Nice. I especially like how the Cougar turned out. You also did the Mustang too, right?

I'm starting my second roller job. A 86 Thunderbird. My 92 Ranger was my learning project. I can't wait to see the result. My Tbird won't get paint for a while as I have some nagging repairs to do to the a/c and replace the heater core which requires the dash to come out. I've already removed much of the trim.

Yes, the Mustang in the picture I painted using a mix of Rust-Oleum Topside Deep Green Gloss and Gloss Black.

Here are pictures of some of the others I have rolled-on.

I'll do it for friends and family, but too much labor to be worth doing it for a business.

Well, I reworked my schedule and I am staying a week longer in order to paint up the Ranchero.

Here it is just before paint.

The bed had some surface rust So I sanded it down and applied some Rust Destroyer before painting.

After first coat of Gloss Sunburst Yellow on Passenger side

One coat to driver side, two coats over the top and 4 coats on passenger side.

I had to head back home before I could finish, but I have been back this week and I was able to make some progress. It now has 8 coats of Sun Burst Yellow gloss and 4 coats of topside Gloss Black on the lower fenders and doors as well as the center of the hood. I plan for a black bed cover which should balance out the black from front to back. I have to head back home and I plan on finishing it up when I return in a few weeks.
I might have a buyer for this Ranchero. The Family that gave me my dog Oso, has indicated they are interested in it, and I plan on giving them a very good deal on it because the dog they gave me has become a great pal.

It's been awhile since I posted, I did sell this Ranchero and I included the shell that was on top of my 1973 Ranchero Squire CJ. I painted the shell to match the colors of the 1978 Ranchero 500. The weather had not been very cooperative as it seem to rain every time I had available to me to paint. I did get 12 coats on before turning the car over to it's new owner, but I did not get a chance to do the final sanding with 2000 or polish it. I have given the new owners instructions on how to finish it up as well as providing them this web site as a source for information. Here are some more pictures.

Hey, where did you get color scheme for you Ranchero in your Avatar from? The reason I ask was I saw a Ranchero or something in the game Mid night Club LA that looks just like your car.

I custom mixed the Green, and the wood grain I was going to replace with the original vinyl type grain but I decided to try wood graining it myself first and if I did not like the results I would just vinyl over it. I liked the way that my grain came out better than the vinyl grain so I have kept it that way. I have never seen another one like it, so I am curious to see a picture of the one you are talking about.
