I really like the notchbacks and convertibles, but with spoilers. Does anyone know if any of the notchbacks have t-tops or was it just hatchbacks?
I'm gonna put the luggage rack and 3rd brake light back on. I also have a trunk lid which doesn't have the holes for that stuff.

They did make notchbacks with T-tops, I've seen them before. But they certainly didn't make as many of them as they did T-top hatchbacks. I had T-tops on an '84 Capri RS 5.0, and I'd rather have an all steel roof, or a convertible.

Dot my first coats on the passenger side tonight, and I think I have full coverage on the driver side. I'll let it set up good and dry, before I hit it with any sandpaper.
A roller is way better than a brush! And with my new thinner mix, it dries quick enough to get in at least 3 coats a day. It seems to hide the unsanded brush strokes I have on the driver side from yesterday too. And on sanded surfaces, it lays down really nicely. I'll see how the driver side looks tomorrow.
Tomorrow, I should be able to reach full coverage on the passenger side, and get the front "grill," bumper, and valence coated as well.

Then it's on to years of sanding, and undoubtedly some top coats...

I love the way water beads on new paint. You can see that the passenger side isn't beaded, because I did some sanding there.

Post by Tommy Hillbilly on May 22nd 2011, 6:15 pm

So I sanded all day. I've gotten I'm using 180 (!) on my worst spots. I guess that will present the challenge of scratch marks, but I'm not done painting. I have everything opaquely covered, except for a couple really small spots on the front bumper and the door rub moldings. Now my plan is to get it smooth, and then, I guess, to proceed with my top coats, while working my way up through the grits, all the way to at least 1500, and maybe 2000.
I will also add a little paint to my rub-throughs, and thin/transparent areas uncovered by this stage of sanding.
Well, it's stopped raining and the sun is out, so I am going out to finish out the daylight...

Even worse are the curves which are soft urethane, and deflect when you go to sand them. These cars definitely present a challenge to a painter.

So yesterday I took a break, and didn't touch the car, but I picked up some 400 on the way to work. Today, I finished knocking down all of the brushstrokes and orange peel, hand-sanding with the 180, and then followed up with some 400 on a block, to attack the visible high spots. I need maybe a few more hours of sanding (on some of the urethane) before I put on more paint.
I kind of cheated, and hit all of my thin areas and rub-throughs with the rattlecan. So now that I have a decent 99% opaque base established, it's time to get serious about my paint application, as I hope to only do 2 or 3 more coats.

Went out and sanded a bit, and it started raining. It's supposed to be nice tomorrow, so I'm hoping to get another coat or two on the whole car.

Some advice: When you are sanding a car and you think you're done, (as if anyone is ever truly done sanding...) lay on the ground and look up at the sides of the car. You may well find out that you're not really done. Take it from someone who has been under many cars. That's when you see all the drips...

I spent the last several days sanding, and so today I threw on some more paint. Got two coats on the whole car except the front bumper cover, pics are after the first. I'm hoping to be able to not have to go any lower than 600 grit on this application, but we'll see.

My only real regret so far, is that I didn't loosen the tops of the ground effects, and on some of them, the seams are filled in with paint. A couple of them were like that when I got the car... I'll go back and address those areas later. I still haven't done my door jambs either.

I also brought down one of my tail lights to see if it matched, and it doesn't. It was painted with the Valspar, and I'm using Rusto now. The Valspar is way darker. So I'll remask the lights, and probably just hit them with the rattlecan Rusto. I'll also paint my front bumper cover and door rub-moldings tomorrow.

I sanded today, and then got on another coat. They are really starting to shine. I also started painting my door rub moldings. I put these coats on 400 wetsanded surface, and hopefully will be able to stick to 600 grit when I sand.

You're making a lot of progress on the Stang. Availability of a matching rattlecan is the biggest (and only) downside to my project with Rusto Topside paint. I did buy some preval sprayers for future use. I just can't get a mixture to atomize correctly.

Today I sanded again. Still had to start with 400 though, but I did get another coat on too. This may be the last one, we'll see how the sand-down goes. I see taxi cabs around town with paintjobs nearly as bad as mine, but with a a good cut and polish, mine will look good. I think the taxi guys just shoot 'em and walk away.
I still need to finish the door moldings and repaint the tail lights too.

I can't wait to put it all back together.

Got my eyes on the prize...

Well, I sanded all day yesterday with 400. I did the trunk, hood, and sides, down to the belt line. Later I looked at it, and there were still a ton of low shiny spots. So I went back with some 220, and started going back over the car.
I'm pretty sure I'm done painting, but I have a ton of sanding ahead of me.

Just make sure when you sand the final coat you only use 1500 or finer grit. it makes the buff easier and you won't have any sanding scratches to worry about.
