Paint Thinner??

Post by Dougie Murder on October 22nd 2010, 9:56 pm

Looking to get my project started soon and i got a few supplies today.
Couldnt find Mineral Spirits anywhere though.

I already have some of the paint thinner pictured below, in my garage. It is water based paint thiner...says "for thinning oil based paints"

Will this work?? Anyone have experience with this kind of stuff?

I would be leary of that but I would try mixing a little bit up and see what what it did and go from there. Where are you located? Here in Tucson Az you can get M.S. everywhere. You could also try penetrol which works the same. A search here will turn up lots of threads about it.

First coat went on pretty much like everyone else's from what ive seen. Its very thin. I mixed 1:1.
Im going to proceed with this thinner and see if i continue to get the same results.

Im located in Toronto Canada. Dont know why I couldnt find MS anywhere...home depot said they dont carry it and the other 2 places didnt even have a spot for it on the shelf.
Cant find Penetrol either...

It looks very mottled. I think I might go 2:1 on the next coats just to get more film build.

Since you are in Canada you might try googling tremclad which is rusto up there and see what they recommend for thinner.

Is the paint dry in that picture or is it still wet and all those spots bubbles? It bubbles, ok but if it is dry I think you have fisheyes which are caused by contamination (dirt, oil, silicone, etc) and will cause problems as you put on more paint.

Those are bubbles/dirt. They popped/sanded out before coat #2.
The one thing that looks like a fisheye is actually a drop of thinner i think...
I wet sanded with 800 and knocked them down quite a bit. No sign of any crater issue after coat #2.

Instructions on the side of the can say "thinning is not reccomended"
Couldnt find any info online.

Pics after coat 2

Im in Vegas for a week so I wont be able to do any more on this...but I am pretty happy with the results thus far.

If you go to Menard's they have mineral spirits in a metal can. Then right next to it they have paint thinner in a plastic jug. Same brand. The paint thinner says (100% Mineral Spirits) right under where it says Paint Thinner. Metal can is $4 more. It is exactly the same stuff. Look on the back everything is identical. This picture I found says (Low Odor Mineral Spirits) The one at Menard's says 100% Mineral Spirits instead. Either way these 2 products are the same. Look at the labels they say the same thing. Low odor, mineral spirits, paint thinner. Save $4 and buy the plastic jug.
