How to make black Darker

Post by Bradley on November 9th 2010, 2:22 pm

Ok so on my mustang, Its black...there were some panels that were really faded, like the roof hood top of the drivers fender trunk etc etc. I rolled black on them and got it down pretty cool,7 coats not a whole lot of orange peel...Yesterday I took it outside and saw that the one fender I did is like 2 shades lighter...the old paint makes it look almost gray.

I didnt paint some panels because they had really nice paint on them already. Is there anyway to make these panels I painted Darker? Do I need more coats? Will it get darker after I cut and polish it?

I don't think there is a lot you can do if you already put on seven coats. As you are finding out, black is not always black and if the new paint is not mixed to the recipe of the original, it won't match. That goes for any color. Add in the fade factor and you will be off even more.
Do I need more paint? yes and no and the paint won't get darker as you cut and buff.
I know you don't want to hear this Sad but the only way I know of to get everything the same is to paint the panels you havent yet. That shouldn't be to bad tho because they are already black and will cover really well. A scuff sand should do for them. Good luck

The good thing is the parts already black won't need 10 coats. All you need is enough to cover them when you color sand and buff.
