1987 F150
Wuts up guy's!
I just bought a new, well new to me 1987 F150 and I have already started stripping the old paint. I'll be posting some pics of my progress tonight.
So far my steps are going to be:
1. Strip
2. Body Filler
3. Primer
4. Paint
I'll be using rustoleum gloss black and MS, for now.
I have a question though, I saw that some people use the ms mix for the first few layers and then switch to penetrol. Is this because they were in the middle of the project and realize the penetrol works better, or is it better to go with ms first to provide a better base and then make the switch?
Why not just go straight to penetrol? The only thing that worries me about this method is the time it will take this paint to cure. It may be dry to the touch but that's only the surface. Penetrol will provide for a thicker layer of paint which would take longer to dry right?

2 Days later and as promised here are some pics from when I started this project, more to follow.
She got a nice wire brush scrub...

Inner Panels

Removed the Bed bolts...

Removed the bumper and taillights

The entire truck is pretty much down to the primer...

Down to the metal

We have primer!!

Paint is soon to come... I'll be sanding the primer and possibly re-priming, is this a good idea?

The thicker the paint, the longer the dry time. I spray so I won't comment on the difference between MS and penetrol but it depends on who is commenting. Seems like its evenly split on who likes what but it started out with mineral spirits in the mopar thread and just lately penetrol has been used and the people using it seem to like it and claim the roll out is better with less orange peel. Try a search for penetrol here and read up on it while you are waiting for some users to answer you. Good luck which ever way you go.

Re: 1987 F150
I've been using mostly Penetrol on my project. It seems to work real well with reducing some of the orange peel. I am on coat 7, and I do have some orange peel ( as expected) but It's certainly less than my first 4 coats.
Specifically I did 8oz paint and 2oz MS, 2oz Penetrol on my first 3 coats and then I went with 8oz paint and 1oz MS, 3oz Pentrol. My last 3 coats have gone on thicker with less orange peel than before.

Re: 1987 F150
Thanks for the reply! I'm struggling with the decisioon to go with mineral spirits or penetrol... The results that I have seen with penetrol are awesome but I already have the MS... I think I'll just go with MS the first 4 layers and then move on to penetrol for the last couple. Wut do u guys think?

Re: 1987 F150
Heck I mixed the Penetrol and MS, I wouldnt hesitate to use just MS, Ive seen too many great looking jobs doing that, so it certainly works.
I just happend to find the penetrol locally so I figured it could hurt
I used 50% paint, 25% penetrol and 25% mineral spirits
