Clear Coat

Post by leeiaccoca on December 21st 2007, 6:35 pm

I used a single stage polyurethane paint and wasn't planning to do apply a clearcoat.

I figure that I am just going to dent my Jeep up again on the trails or some school-age puke on foot is going to key the thing while its parked on the street. I also figure that every couple of years I can dewax and apply a couple of thin coats of paint to keep the finish looking fresh, too. So, why complicate future body repairs and periodic paint work or try to make the thing brand new looking by throwing a clear coat on there?

You think this skipping the clear coat is a good idea or bad idea? Thanks

yeah it will add some protection to the paint, but if you think your going to be fixing scratches and stuff down the line i would skip it myself, simply because it will cause alot more work to fix and repair. imo

That's true, a clear coat while adding protection will limit your ability to make repairs later on. It's going to be difficult to feather in a new repaired clear coated spot to blend with the rest of the sheen of the vehicle. Unless you do that whole panel which might take some time.
