1978 Mustang II Ghia project. Wifes car.

Post by 78StangII on February 5th 2011, 10:58 am

This is a project that my wife and son are working on. My son is helping and learning cause his truck(1977 F-100 short bed)will be next. The car is a 1978 Mustang II Ghia. The car had white paint and red interior which I thought was ugly as all get out. The car was bought from a friend that I work with and who also built the motor. The II has a late model 302 roller cam engine with to many things to list right now. It does sound very good! The car had been used for drag racing.

Here is a pic just after we got it.

Here is a shot of the wife removing the interior panels to get them ready to dye.

Now, the car has been sanded down and all of the body work has been done. The molding along the sides have been removed and will not be replaced. I had to fill in all of the holes on the doors that held the clips to hold them on. I don't have updated pics of the body work at the moment. I'll put those up later.

The interior has been redone in black with new carpet headliner and dash pad. I like this look better. I also redone the dash bezel and replaced the gauges with after market units. Except for the tach and speedo.

Here is a shot of the engine. The II had been sitting up for about two years before I bought it. My friend had it in his shop so it was out of the elements. We drained the gas tank, blew out the fuel lines, put new gas in her and she fired right up. Currently most of this in the image has been removed for painting.

Hopefully soon with all of the great information on this site I'll have a nicely painted car this spring. We'll see...

The interior color change makes a much more modern look.

I was planning on telling this in this in Hadleys thread, but....

In '79, my friend Mike's mom had a '76 Mustang II. Brown with brown interior. Had some good times with that car. I was sad to see it go. Mike spun out in the snow, and hit a tree while sliding backwards. The bumper was slightly bent, but the passengers door had popped open. The door would no longer close as the opening had been distorted.

Too bad, it was a good looking car. Looking back, I am sure the car could have been repaired, but a running car was needed. Mike's mom bought a used Dodge Dart, but that is a story for another time.

Wow! glad they were okay. I'm a Mopar guy at heart. I have a 74 Duster 360 that my son and redone. I've been wanting a 72 Dodge Dart to toy around with.

OK, right away I realized 2:1 mix is to thin. So, I mixed at about 3:1 and seemed to flow a little better. I do have some runs but there laying flat real nice. My hood scoop. I don't know what happen with it. I just scuffed it up and sprayed. I think someone before sprayed it with a paint that is not compatible with my paint. I'll post some pick after while.

Okay, I ended up spraying three coats on each fenders and the hood scoop. Unfortunately I have some runs that I'll have to wet sand out but hey, I haven't sprayed a car in 17 years. Anyway, here is what I have.

Here is the first coat.

Second coat.

Third coat.

Hood scoop.

Close up on the driver fender.

So far I'm liking this. Even though I have some runs which will be nothing to remove, I'm glad I went this route. Now onward to the rest of the car.

No, It was Rusto Professional.

Thanks for compliments guys. What I've done so far was a lot of fun. I'm anxious to get the rest of the car done but still have a little more work to the body to do first.

What mix ratio are you using? I never could get it right... might be that I'm running too much air through my sprayer, too.

I started out 2:1 but went instead with about a 3:1 mix. I set my gun to I think it was 35 psi. That is the regulator on the gun, not the air compressor. Also the tip I used on my gun was a 1.4.

The tip size makes a big difference (1.4 is good for finish work) as does air pressure. Also a big difference in pressure settings between HVLP and a old fashioned siphon gun. They usually require 50lb at the gun. HVLP works different and you need to read the directions for your perticular gun.

All I was able to do today was the undersides of the hood and trunk. I ran out of mineral spirits and need to get more. Didn't turn out bad at all. I think I found my happy spot for mixing the paint. The temp was a little better today for spraying also.
