Post by Raun31 on May 9th 2011, 11:13 pm

I have a 93 mustang that is white and kinda dull and i wanted to paint it with the rustoleum topside white and i was wondering if i should sand all the way down and prime and paint or just sand and repaint since its the same color

The best undercoat is the factory paint if it is still good. If so, just sand and repaint.

I haven't sprayed that paint but I would think probably about 3 paint to 1 thinner. That is about what regular auto enamel paint is reduced to. You can experiment from there. If you haven't sprayed before a bit of practice using an old fender or something, even a large piece of cardboard, would be nice and you can alter the mix from there if you want.

I have always sprayed because I have the space and can. It is a lot faster and, I think, easier because there is less sanding.. If you just have damage confined to one panel then repair it, mask off the rest of the car and paint away. Make sure the whole car is masked because it you miss an area you WILL get overspray there. The prep is the same wither you roll or spray. another thing is if you even think you can see something in primer you WILL see it in color, however white is pretty forgiving. Good luck

If you go through the metal you need to primer that. Since you are white it is best to use a light gray or white primer. And yes, a rattle can will work fine for that.

I would sand the whole car with 320 or 400,and wipe down with wax and grease remover before shooting any primer or paint.
