87 mustang gt

Post by stang87gt on May 10th 2011, 1:10 pm

just getting this started I will keep updated as much as possible.

Here is what I am starting with

Bad paint peel on the fenders and rear hatch

here is what i got so far:

Drivers side fender self etching primer

Driver side fender with one coat of Rustoleum clean metal primer

the peel on the drivers side is not as bad as on the passenger side but is still showing through might have to do more sanding to level it out

Welcome, and have fun with all of the masking and fine detail work involved with painting an '87-'93 GT! Rolling Eyes Nice car.

What color are you going with? Now's your chance to make for three white Mustangs on this forum!

Any questions about the car, post them here. I know the fox bodies more intimately than any other car. I converted mine to Mass Air, and have done pretty much every other job that can be done on these cars.

Thanks,
I was thinking black but decided I don't have the time right now to do all the prep work for it to work, the car is originally white don't want that, was thinking of a blue if i can find the right color its still up in the air right now

Well Finally got some sanding time in today YAY! Palm sanded 85% of the drivers side took some surface rust spots down to bare metal and spray primed those didnt take any pics of that.

I sanded down the drivers side fender and the hood with a foam block 220 was planning on taking it down to primer because of the areas that were showing factory primer didnt seem to be filling in but to my surprise as i was sanding they filled in nicely hope to get another coat on her tomorrow.

Stang87gt,
Welcome to Rolled on! Nice stang. Looks like you're making good progress. Peeling paint can be a pain to fix. Take your time and feather it out, in the end you will glad you did.

Woulda liked to have gone with a medium to dark blue, but my car has a red interior. That limited me to red, white, or black. I'd like to paint/dye the interior black, but don't know if I will.

yeah mine has red interior plan on dying it or finding a decent interior gray or black in a junk yard and transplanting the seats and center console and just dye the carpet and the red on the dash panel.

want something on the hood a scoop or thought about going with Dupli-ColorŽ MirageŽ Color System where the hood rises and do like an 86 gt type hood. I think i might do my wheels, and molding around the car with this as well

Awesome. Go for it. Take your time and get the body straight. They say prep is 90% of a good paint job...with black it may be 98% cheers T. Hadley did a great job with his black mustang. Keep the pics coming!!

not very much progress this past week still working on the front of the mustang hood is ready to paint but the orange peel that is on the fenders is prooving to be a task should have thinned the primer i think.

I can get most of the fenders smooth but the orange peel just above and just below the body line just wont go away

well finally started painting was gonna test on the rear wing did one coat on it layed down flawless with no roller marks.

But after that realized i had more paint than would fit back into the container so i did the hood, front bumper and both fenders before it would all fit back in the container again layed down flawless but alot of roller marks on the hood my guess is that i cannot make full length passes.

anyhoo I will post pics in the morn

Mix was 2:1 with ms and 1,000,000,000,000 degrees outside (actually around 95 and 80-85% humidity)

Re: 87 mustang gt

Nice, I like these cars in black.
One thing I recommend, is getting a rattle can, and spraying the "Mustang GT" recessed letters on the ground effects and rear bumper. Also in the recessed part of the rub molding (where the tape stripe would be) and the taillights. I also sprayed my foglight holes and the "grill" under the bumper, as well as around my front lights, since I left them in and masked them. Any place where it's hard to sand, or where a roller or brush won't reach.

yeah i pulled all the lights on the front end and sprayed around them before i put them back in, figured i would hit everything around coat number 3 or 4 with the rattle can.

gonna mask of the mustang gt on the body kit at spray them silver i think

Dang! That's some serious coverage! What brand of paint are you using?

Was your Ford badge glued on, in the front? Or were there little nuts on the threads which poke through the bumper cover? My '92 had nuts as I remember, but on my '88 it was just glued on - but still had the threads. (I just pulled it off a few days ago...)

I've been thinking about painting the recessed letters silver on mine, too. I'd also like to try some of that candyapple paint now available in rattlecans too.
