Penetrol vs. mineral spirits

Post by craigt502 on May 12th 2011, 2:29 pm

I plan on using penetrol instead of mineral spirits to thin the paint.
Has anyone used penetrol?
Is the ratio for paint:penetrol the same that would be for paint:mineral spirits.
In other words, when people use mineral spirits, they say to try and get the paint to be like milk.
So when using penetrol, do you want the paint to be like milk as well?

Thanks

Why "instead" of and not in "addition" to? I use a mix of penetrol and MS and it's worked great. My ratio has been 12 oz paint, 4 oz penetrol, 2 oz MS. When mixed it has the consistency of 2% milk.

Welcome. X2 on adding mineral spirits to the mix. I thought I would thin with Penatrol only, and was happier after trying mineral spirits. I was using a roughly 50/50 mix. The Penatrol doesn't thin the paint as much as a smaller amount of the MS does, and it dries a LOT better with MS too. And it sands better as well. I think it adds a clearer gloss than Penatrol by itself.

How did the penetrol Mix come out?

I'm about to do the same.
