what do you clean your veichle off with before paint

Post by way2fasts on May 19th 2011, 11:54 pm

I want to know what towels/ product you have to use to wipe off your vehicle before paint so that i dont mess up anything. I was going to get rubbing alchol and use a flannel cloth, good or bad idea

I always wash it real good with dish soap first. That will cut any grease/oil on the car. Dednatured alchol will work fine for a final prep/wipe downbut not sure on the flannel cloth. Dosen't that leave lint, etc behind? Not sure about that tho. Hopefully someone else will chime in about the rags they use.

I have always used enamel reducer to wipe down BEFORE my first coat of primer went on. Then if needed any good wax/grease remover or denatured alchol.
As fas as what rag to use the guy that tought me how to paint always used a good quallity paper towel, a wad in each hand, one soaked with reducer and the other to dry the panel, both hands going at the same time, so thats what I have been using for 25 years now and have never had a problem.
Hope this helps.

What ever you do DON'T wipe it down with lacquer thinner for the final clean. I did that once (well, it drys fast) and sprayed in about 10 minutes. Came out real pretty and I was even thinking I wouldn't even have to color sand and buff. The next morning tho there was bubbles about the size of a match ALL over the car ahhh and mad3 to say the least. I had to go clear back to the OEM primer. I finally figured out the lacquer was degassing and since it was hotter than the enamel it made the bubbles.
